ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Cole Gorman struck out six and hurled five shutout innings as Gates Chili defeated host Eastridge, 15-7 in Section V Baseball action on Wednesday.
The junior right-hander walked three and allowed one hit for his first victory (1-1) of the season.
“The curve ball had a lot of bite to it today,” he said. “I was able to locate that where I wanted. I was able to hit a couple high fastballs on two-strike counts. Those pitch mixes were working.”
The Gates Chili bats did their part as well.
Pete Dellefave III connected on a two-run home run as part of six-run top of the first to give Gorman the lead before he stepped on the mound.
“The adrenaline rush of being up six, I was having a lot of fun,” Gorman said. “I was just doing my job and keeping the lead.”
Keeping his focus also became a challenge as the Spartans tacked on six more runs in the third for a 13-0 lead.
“Getting back on the mound I felt like I needed a whole warmup,” he said with a smile. “It’s a good problem to have. Team is putting up runs, I’ll take that any day. Pitch with a lead. Throw strikes and let them hit the ball.”

Gorman’s outing helped Gates (2-3) snap a three-game losing skid.
“He established the strike zone,” said Gates Chili head coach Dean Dingee. “That’s one of the things we haven’t been doing is throwing strikes.
“He was locating. He was mixing. Cole is a very smart, heady ballplayer. He knows how to set guys up.”
Jordan Hoock and Dylan Sweeney collected two hits apiece to pace a Gates offense which put at least one run on the board in each of the first five innings.
“It’s great to have the hits,” Dingee said. “Yesterday, we hit the ball against Athena (a 12-4 loss). We didn’t cash guys in. Today, the focus was get the guys on and somebody’s got to be the RBI man.”
Hoock was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sweeney drove in three with two hits in three trips to the plate.
Andrew McManus singled, walked three times and scored three runs. Gavin Sweeney was 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Gorman collected two walks, two RBI and two runs scored.
Jacob Gangross walked and scored twice. Jeff Fisher had an RBI. Nick DiFrancesca and Alex Mangini both walked and scored. Bruce Hanna had a walk, RBI and run scored.
“It felt good to get back in the win column for sure,” Gorman said.
Brennen Russo finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk, RBI and a run scored to lead Eastridge (2-2). Benigno Calixto was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Evan Bishop singled, walked, drove in a run and scored. Jayden Inglese drove in a run and scored. Jack Nichols walked and scored. Finn Underhill and Mario Solis both walked and scored.
