Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Preview: Lyons and Byron-Bergen to battle for regional spot

One team is looking to make its 11th trip to the state quarterfinals. The other seeks to clinch a program-first. Lyons and Byron-Bergen tip off Wednesday with a spot in the New York State Class C Far West Regional on the line. Here’s the breakdown:

LYONS LIONS (21-2/Section V Independent)

BYRON-BERGEN BEES (20-4/Genesee Region Division I)
Wednesday, 7 PM at Bloomfield.

Scoring offense: Lyons (73.7 PPG), Byron-Bergen (62.3 PPG)

Scoring defense: Lyons (48.0 PPG), Byron-Bergen (51.0 PPG)

Current streak: Lyons has won its last 11 games, with an average margin of victory of 19.2 points per game over that span. Byron-Bergen has won 10 straight with its last loss coming on January 22nd.

How they arrived here: Lyons opened the postseason with a 76-42 victory over Bloomfield before beating Gananda, 71-53. The Lions then defeated Pembroke, 71-53 to claim their 22nd title. Byron-Bergen started its sectional run by picking up a 69-37 quarterfinal win over Eugenio Maria de Hostos. The Bees then rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat York in the Class C2 semifinals before clinching their first championship in program history with a 52-46 victory over Alexander. B-B avenged an earlier loss with a 67-60 victory over Genesee Region rival, Notre Dame-Batavia in the sub-regional to set up Wednesday’s tilt.

Players to watch for Lyons: JJ Johnson So. F 19.6 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 2.6 BPG; Mikey Briggs Sr. G 13.2 PPG, 5.9 APG, 5.4 SPG, 5.2 RPG; Devyn Williams Sr. G 11.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 3.4 APG, 2.5 SPG; Stephen LeBrecht So. F 10.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.0 SPG; Dez Bell Sr. G 6.5 PPG, 5.9 APG, 4.0 RPG, 3.0 SPG.

Players to watch for Byron-Bergen: Braedyn Chambry Sr. F/C 22.0 PPG, 12.0 RPG; Brody Baubie Sr. G/F 13.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG; Colin Martin Sr. G 10.4 PPG, 3.3 APG, 3.0 RPG; Brendan Pimm Sr. G/F 6.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG

Coaches: Dean Schott II (Lyons), Roxanne Noeth (Byron-Bergen)

Last time they met: You have to go back to 1982 on the floor of the Rochester War Memorial. Lyons defeated Byron-Bergen, 76-60 to continue an unbeaten march to the Class B title – what was then the sixth in program history.

History 101: Lyons is looking to clinch its second straight trip to regionals and what would be its Section V-leading 12th. Byron-Bergen, coming off its first sectional title is making its first foray this deep into the postseason.
