
Genesee Region foes will take the court Monday night looking to continue their seasons as Section V Class C2 champion Byron-Bergen faces C3 champ Notre Dame-Batavia for a spot in Wednesday’s regional qualifier. Here’s the breakdown:

How they arrived here: Byron-Bergen started its sectional run by picking up a 69-37 quarterfinal win over No. 8 seed Eugenio Maria de Hostos. The Bees then rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit against No. 4 seed York in the Class C2 semifinals to earn a spot in the title game. Byron-Bergen clinched its first championship in program history with a 52-46 victory over Alexander.
Notre Dame-Batavia got past No. 13 seed Alfred Almond 85-29 in the first round before beating No. 5 Finney 87-73 in the quarterfinals. The semi-finals saw the Fighting Irish beat top-seeded Fillmore 72-65 and in the final ND-B beat Arkport-Canaseraga, 70-51.

History 101: Coming off its first sectional title in program history, Byron-Bergen boys’ basketball is making its first appearance this deep into the postseason. Notre Dame-Batavia has made three appearances in the qualifiers since 2012 having advanced to the Class D state quarterfinals in 2012 and 2014. The Fighting Irish have made six regional appearances overall including 1992 when they won the NYS Class D title.
What’s next: The winner will face C1 champion Lyons in the regional qualifier on Wednesday. Time and location of that game are to be determined.
