ROCHESTER, N. Y. — Gabby Brown-Sturdviant and Nevaeh Grisham combined to score 12 third-quarter points as East High erased a halftime deficit and went on to beat host Edison/SWW, 60-47 in RCAC action, Thursday afternoon.

Brown-Sturdviant used a spin move in the lane to create space for a bucket and lead that East did not surrender at 34-33.

“Understanding your mismatch,” said East High head coach Moe Jones. “We had some mismatches that we had to take advantage of when you got the opportunity.

“A lot of people can’t stay in front of our guards. Once that happened, we wanted to take full advantage of it. Run the offense and get some baskets.”

Grisham converted a steal and layup then followed with another theft before getting to the line where the junior hit one for East’s first double-digit advantage of the game at 46-36.

The duo scored six apiece in the decisive quarter.

The Eagles forced 14 turnovers in the third quarter and limited Edison to one field goal during the eight-minute segment.

A big part of the defensive emphasis in the third frame was to neutralize the Edison/SWW backcourt of Gabriella Lopez and Kaysia Jones.

“We had to step up the intensity on defense,” Moe Jones said. “We put a little bit more pressure on them.”

Jones hit a 3-pointer to make it a 37-36 game with just over four minutes remaining in the third. East did not allow a point for a remainder for the frame – a stretch of 13 trips down the floor.

“We didn’t want ‘K-K’ (Kaysia Jones) to get in rhythm,” the East High coach said. “She got in foul trouble. Once ‘K-K’ went to the bench, they were down to two guards. Then we took advantage of our speed.”

The win was the fourth straight for East (5-1) which was coming off a double overtime victory against Brighton last Wednesday.

“It was getting the ball to those two (Brown-Sturdviant and Grisham) and executing the offense.”

Brown-Sturdviant finished with 25 points, six assists and seven steals. Grisham had 10 points, five assists and three steals. Semaj Jackson added 13 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Ali’Yana Robinson (3), Ayasha Cherry-Fayton (4), Antwanette Coleman (2) and Sinayah Abney (3) also scored for the Eagles.

Jones led Edison/SWW (2-2) with 18. Lopez hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Inventors. NaKayla Costello added 13 points. Quanayzia (2) and Kenya Scott (3) also scored.
