Danny Mendick (Pittsford Mendon/Monroe Community College) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the host Syracuse Mets erased a late-inning deficit to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 9-8 in 10 innings, Saturday night.
Mendick plated former Wing Jaylin Davis with his second hit of the night for the walk-off win.
Rochester led 8-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth when Syracuse’s Ronny Mauricio plated two runs with a bases-loaded single to send the game to extra innings.
Derek Hill went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored to lead Rochester’s offense. The Wings’ leadoff man walked and scored on a Jacob Nottingham base hit in the top of the ninth to give the Wings the two-run advantage. Jeter Downs connected on a solo shot earlier in the inning.
Travis Blankenhorn doubled, walked twice and drove in a run for Rochester. Eric Mejia singled and brought in two runs. Richie Martin singled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored two more.
Twice Rochester led by three runs (5-2, 6-3) in the game.
Jimmy Yacabonis (2-0) worked one inning in relief to pick up the win. Daniel Mengden (0-1) took the loss for Rochester.
Mendick has driven in 36 runs this season. A 22nd-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the 2015 MLB draft, Mendick has appeared in 70 games for Syracuse in 2023. The nine-year veteran played four games with the New York Mets last month.
Mendick has played in 155 games major-league games over the past five seasons. He hit .289 with eight extra-base hits including three home runs in 2022 with the White Sox. He signed a free-agent deal with the Mets in the most recent off-season.
Rochester (7-7/41-46) and Syracuse (3-10/36-51) will continue their series on Sunday with a 1:05 PM start from NBT Bank Stadium.
