Fillmore and Avoca-Prattsburgh to decide Class D1 title

The two top-seeded teams in Class D1 will face off on Saturday to decide the 2023 Section V Baseball Class D1 title. Fillmore and Avoca-Prattsburgh will meet in the championship for the second consecutive year. Here’s the breakdown:

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Fillmore shutout No. 9 Keshequa, 12-0 on Monday, before defeating No. 4 Arkport-Canaseraga, 10-9 on Wednesday. Avoca-Prattsburgh downed No. 10 Lyndonville, 12-1 in the quarterfinals, before earning a spot in the championship game with a 5-4 win over No. 3 Naples on Wednesday.

Tempo and trends: Fillmore scores 13.6 runs per game and allows 3.2. The Eagles hold a 13-game win streak with four shutouts this season. The team has a +108-run differential in their current stretch, and a +188 differential for the season. The Eagles last loss came back on May 21st versus Bolivar-Richburg. Avoca-Prattsburgh scores 10.2 runs per game and allows 1.7. The Knights hold a eight-game win streak, with five shutouts recorded this season. The team holds a +73-run differential during the stretch, and a +187 differential for the season. The Titans last loss came on May 5th versus the Eagles.

What’s at stake: The winner advances to play the Class D2 champion (either Northstar Christian or Charles G. Finney) on Tuesday for a spot in the NYS Class D Far West Regional.

History 101: Fillmore defeated A-P 4-3 in last year’s D1 title game. The teams have played once this season, which resulted in a 5-3 win for Fillmore on May 5th. Fillmore is seeking its fifth title all time. Avoca-Prattsburgh is searching for its first sectional title as a combined program. Avoca won six championships with the last being in 2019. Prattsburgh claimed five titles from 1981 to 2007.
