Avery Point, CT. — Zach Allen (Greece, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) scattered thee hits and two walks in a complete-game effort as Monroe Community College Baseball defeated host UConn-Avery Point, 4-0 to salvage a split in NJCAA action, Saturday.
Allen struck out seven and improved to 5-2 on the season with his third complete game. The freshman right-hander hit the leadoff batter in the fifth inning and then retired the final eight he faced including a double play in the fifth. Allen has struck out 36 in 29 innings of work this season.
Joe Grzeskowiak (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Patrick May (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored apiece to lead the offense. Grzeskowiak brought home Dylan Wanat (Buffalo, N.Y./ Williamsville North) with a sacrifice fly to give Allen all the runs he needed.
Wanat and Lucas Brown (Toronto, ON/Humberside Collegiate Institute) led the game with back-to-back base hits to set up Grzeskowiak.
Grzeskowiak doubled and scored on May’s two-out single in the fourth.
Monroe added a pair of runs in the sixth.
Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) and May reached on consecutive one-out singles. Alex Simons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) followed with an RBI double to plate Kiefer. May came home on a wild pitch.
The win proved to be the lone bright spot of the weekend for Monroe.
Kiefer had a pair of hits in a 2-for-3 outing earlier in the day, but MCC fell behind early and never recovered in a 5-2 loss.
Trailing 5-0, Brown and Grzeskowiak both singled and scored in the seventh when the Tribunes sent eight to the plate and left the bases loaded.
May singled and had an RBI in Saturday’s opener.
Monroe fell 4-3 in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader with the Pointers.
Wanat reached base three times including a leadoff single in the seventh. CJ Phelps (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) delivered a bases-loaded single that scored Wanat to knot the game at three.
For the second time in as many days, the Tribunes left the bases loaded in their final at-bat.
Phelps went 2-for-3 with a walk. May was 2-for-4 while Avery Bowens (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) singled, doubled and scored a run.
Elian Collado Martinez plated Tyler Rice with a two-out walk-off single to lift UConn-Avery Point.
Kiefer and Bowen managed the only hits in Monroe’s 4-0 loss to close the weekend. Kiefer connected on a one-out double in the second inning of what was then a scoreless game, but the Tribunes’ second baseman was left stranded.
Phelps, Simons and Julien Mendoza (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport) worked a walk apiece.
Patrick Sherron (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) started and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. The right-hander fanned two. Lucas Connors (Brampton, ON/Heart Lake) allowed one run on two hits over two innings of relief work. The right-hander struck out two.
MCC travels to play a doubleheader at Erie CC on Thursday. A 2 p.m. first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled.
