Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Regional Qualifier Preview: Irondequoit and Pittsford Sutherland clash for spot in Far West Regional

Monroe County Division III rivals Irondequoit and Pittsford Sutherland will meet on Wednesday for the third time in a little more than three months. This time a spot in the New York State Class A Far West Regional is up for grabs. Here’s the breakdown:

IRONDEQUOIT EAGLES (19-4/Monroe County Division III)
vs.
 PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (16-7/Monroe County Division III)

Scoring offense: Irondequoit (65.1 PPG), Pittsford Sutherland (63.2 PPG)

Scoring defense: Irondequoit (47.6 PPG), Pittsford Sutherland (54.6 PPG)

Current streak: Since dropping regular season finales, both Irondequoit and Sutherland have won three straight.

How they arrived here: Irondequoit beat No. 7 Canandaigua by a 60-37 score in the quarterfinals and took down No. 3 Webster Thomas, 67-52, in the semifinals. The Eagles avenged an earlier loss with a 76-59 victory over Greece Athena in the A1 championship game. Pittsford Sutherland beat No. 5 Pittsford Mendon by a 49-46 score in the quarterfinals and used overtime to take down top-seeded Monroe, 73-69, in the semifinals. The Knights won their 10th sectional title in program history with a 53-46 triumph over East in the A2 championship game.

Last time they met: Irondequoit took both regular season meetings. The Eagles won the season opener on December 2nd at home, 55-49 and took a 58-52 decision at Sutherland on January 13th.

History 101: Both squads are looking to clinch a third regional appearance. Irondequoit made the state quarterfinals in 2017 and 2018. The Eagles went on to win the 2017 NYS Class A title. Irondequoit advanced to the state semifinals in 2018. Sutherland last advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2008. The Knights also made a regional appearance in 1984. The last postseason meeting between Irondequoit and Sutherland occurred in 2018 when the Eagles eliminated Sutherland with a 56-48 victory in the semifinals.

What’s next: Winner will face the Section VI representative either McKinley or Amherst on Saturday in the NYS Class A Far West Regional.

A 6:30 p.m. tip off is scheduled at Canandaigua High School.
