PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women’s basketball team took on Russell Sage College at home for a Saturday afternoon Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals had a strong game, winning 95-70 against the Gators. After today, Fisher improves their record to 13-2 and 8-0 in conference play. The Cardinals winning streak extends to nine games and they lead the conference standings.
Emilia Johnson started the game scoring the first layup of the game early in the first minute. Shortly after, Sidney Tomasso scored a layup and Katie Moravec made two free-throws to see the Cardinals lead 6-5. The two teams traded multiple layups until Claire Kruszka made two free-throws. The Cardinals began to break away, after scoring four to go in front 18-13 with 4:36 to play. A layup was made by each team, with the quarter ending with the Cardinals winning 24-19.
The second quarter started with Lauren Nawojski scoring a jumper. A bit later, Presleigh Brunner hit a good three-pointer, seeing the Cardinals lead 29-21. The two teams went back and forth for a couple of minutes, with Emily McLaughlin highlighting the run with a good three-pointer, putting the Cardinals up 38-27. The teams spent the rest of the quarter sharing points and with the half ending Fisher led 51-41.
Kaitlyn Walker helped the Cardinals get a strong start to the second half, with a good layup. Two minutes later Kruszka scored two good free-throws. A minute after that, Ka. Moravec made a good layup. The Cardinals then proceeded to go on a 10-point run that put the Cardinals up 67-42. Both teams spent the last 1:30 scoring three points each, with the quarter ending in the Cardinal’s favor, 72-49.
The final quarter started with Nawojski scoring a good jumper that started a seven-point run by the Cardinals. Ka. Moravec quickly followed with another good layup, putting the Cardinals up by 30 points. The teams shared points for the next few minutes, with Kelly Moravec scoring a layup that put the score at 91-62. Shortly after, Ashley Pavan got on the scoreboard with a jumper and two free-throws. The Gators finished the game by scoring eight points, however that was not enough, with Fisher winning 95-70.
Tomasso had a stellar game, scoring 18 points, playing 34 minutes, and having four rebounds and four steals. Ka. Moravec was another star, scoring 15 points, having five steals, and playing 21 minutes. Brunner led in rebounds with seven, while also scoring 12 points and having three assists. Walker also had a strong game, scoring 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
The Cardinals play next at home on Tuesday, January 24 for a 6:00 p.m. Battle of the Beaks matchup against Empire 8 rivals, Nazareth College.
