Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport women’s basketball team lost a close one at home on Saturday to Oneonta, 66-65. Oneonta took a one-point lead in the final minute to sneak away with the win.
Brockport is now 7-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference, while the Red Dragons moved to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the SUNYAC.
Zairea Hannah was fantastic scoring the ball, putting up a season-high 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting. She was also 5-for-5 at the foul line and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste finished with 16 points, doing damage with four makes from beyond the arc. Anna Lee scored 12 points, while Juan Brown had 10 points, seven boards, and four blocks.
Some solid shooting from the Red Dragons helped them jump out to a lead in the first quarter. Anna Lee got going offensively to help Brockport keep it close, as the team trailed, 17-11, going into the second.
Stephanie Jean-Baptiste’s long-range shooting made a significant impact in the second quarter. She hit a 3-pointer on three consecutive possessions to give Brockport a 27-25 lead. Oneonta closed out the half with some quick buckets to regain a 1-point lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the two teams battled to a 38-38 draw with 6:02 on the clock. The Golden Eagles would soon grind out a slim lead on the scoreboard, 44-38. Zairea Hannah’s work offensively in the third helped give Brockport a 6-point lead going into the fourth.
In the final period, the Green and Gold lead would grow to as many as nine points, just past the 6-minute mark. The visiting Red Dragons turned up the intensity, going on a big run to take a 61-60 lead with less than three to play.
Hannah finished through contact and made the free throw for a clutch 3-point play in the final minute. Her bucket made it a 65-63 lead for Brockport with 55 seconds remaining. Oneonta answered with a 3-point play of its own to go up, 66-65, with 35 second left. Brockport was unable to score in the final moments, resulting in the 1-point loss.
The Golden Eagles are now on the road for a pair of conference matchups next weekend. They take on Plattsburgh at 5:30pm on Friday and Potsdam at 2pm on Saturday.
