Brockport, NY – Tony Arnold lifted Brockport past Oneonta, 65-63, with an awesome finish at the basket with less than a second on the clock. Brockport has now won six in a row, improving to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
On the way to 14 points in a big win at home, Arnold scored the last six points for the Golden Eagles in crunch time. He tied the game up twice and scored the game-winner all in the final 2:04 of regulation.
Jahidi Wallace led the team in scoring with 17 points in the contest. Mekhi Beckett was 3-for-5 from deep on the way to 11 points for the Green and gold. Colby Jordan had nine points, including a key make to beat the shot clock late in the game.
In a rematch of the SUNYAC Semifinals last year, Brockport came out early looking for revenge. The team jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead to start the game. Oneonta would answer though, and eventually worked towards a 6-point advantage.
Trailing as halftime approached, Jahidi Wallace got into a rhythm offensively. He scored eight of Brockport’s last 10 points to end the first half. A pair of made free throws for the Red Dragons gave them a 32-29 lead at the break.
Slowly but surely Oneonta began to build a lead as the second half got going. With 13:26 on the clock, the visiting team led the Green and Gold, 45-36. Freshman Zachary Rice was fouled on two 3-point attempts, going 5-for-6 at the line to help close the gap.
Mekhi Beckett hit two big shots from downtown in the second half, helping to tie the score up at 57-57 with four minutes to play. Soon after, Colby Jordan hit a tough shot to beat the shot clock which put Brockport ahead, 59-57.
The Red Dragons took a 61-59 lead with 2:17 left in regulation, but soon Tony Arnold would steal the show. He tied the score up at 61-61 on the next possession for Brockport. He then split four free throw attempts down the stretch, eventually tying the game up at 63-63 with 11 seconds left.
Arnold’s final miss at the foul line would be rebounded by teammate David Grady III, who grinded out a team-high 37 minutes of action. Head Coach Greg Dunne setup what became the game-winning play in the ensuing timeout.
Tony Arnold attacked the basket off of a screen from Grady with the clock winding down. He spun past the help defender and finished the layup off the glass to put the Golden Eagles up 65-63. Oneonta missed its last effort in the final 0.6 seconds, as Brockport pulled out the win at home.
The Golden Eagles are on the road next weekend. They take on Plattsburgh on Friday at 7:30pm and Potsdam at 4pm on Saturday for another SUNYAC set.
