NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond senior Tyler Burton as its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Massachusetts freshman RJ Luis was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 2-8.
Burton averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals in a pair of wins, outscoring all players in both games (vs George Washington, vs Duquesne). The forward from Uxbridge, Mass., shot 48.5 percent from the field and 82.4 percent from the foul line. He scored 26 points with seven rebounds and four steals versus GW, followed by 23 points, eight rebounds and two steals against the Dukes. Burton’s effort against Duquesne led Richmond to a 22-point comeback win, the largest rally in the Chris Mooney era (18 seasons).
Luis averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting over 47.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from 3-point range. The guard from Miami scored 11 points and hauled in five rebounds in win over Saint Louis. He tied for team-high in scoring at GW with 13 points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds and a career-best five assists.

Davidson’s Sam Mennega averaged 21.0 points on .696 (16-of-23) shooting from the field in a split week for the Wildcats … Da Ron Holmes II had a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double with three assists and three blocks in Dayton’s win over Saint Joseph’s to lead the Flyers to a 3-0 start … UD freshman Mike Sharavjamts had six points off a pair of threes plus four assists in the win over SJU … Jimmy Clark III scored 26 points on 10-of-17 (.588) shooting with six rebounds and five steals in Duquesne’s win over VCU … Duquesne freshman David Dixon had 11 points and five rebounds, with a perfect 5-for-5 performance from the field at Richmond … Darius Quisenberry scored 33 points while shooting .563 (9-for-16) from the field with four assists and a near-perfect 11-for-12 (.917) at the line in against Rhode Island … James Bishop averaged 25.5 points with a pair of five-assists games in a split week for George Washington … La Salle’s Khalil Brantley scored 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists in an overtime win against Rhode Island … Noah Fernandes averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals for UMass in a split week … Rhode Island’s Brayon Freeman averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds over two two games for the Rams … Rhody freshman Abdou Samb averaged 6.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots, and shot .833 from the field … Chad Venning led St. Bonaventure with 23 points and six rebounds, while shooting 10-of-12 (.833) from the field versus Saint Louis … Yuri Collins recorded 10 assists (and 16 points) at UMass and 14 assists (and 11 points) versus St. Bonaventure for Saint Louis … SLU freshman Larry Hughes, Jr. scored 12 points across two games, sinking four triples for the Billikens.
