Morrisville, NY — The SUNY Brockport men’s basketball team had a big second half to defeat the Morrisville State Mustangs, 78-63, on the road Friday night. Brockport improves to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC after winning two in a row.
Mekhi Beckett led all scorers in the game with 23 points, hitting 5-of-10 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Beckett also grabbed eight boards and swiped away two steals. Tony Arnold also hit double-digits, finishing with 10 points.
David Grady III was a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line on his way to 11 points. Defensively he blocked three shots, making it the sixth time in nine games he has sent away at least three shots.
Jahidi Wallace chipped in all over with eight points, seven boards, and a team-high four assists. Tyler Cowie tallied seven points and came away with eight rebounds to tie a team-high on the night.
It was a back-and-forth affair to start the first half, as the two non-conference opponents traded baskets early. At 11:01 on the clock the score was tied at 16-16. Brockport surged forward with 3-point baskets from Jahidi Wallace, Zachary Rice, and Mekhi Beckett to close out the half. Beckett sank his long-range shot with six ticks left on the clock before halftime to put the squad up, 38-34.
The Golden Eagles shot an efficient 6-for-11 from beyond the arc in the opening half. They continued the solid shooting in the second half to finish the game going 50% from downtown, for their best 3-point shooting performance this season.
Early on in the second half Brockport extended its lead to double-digits for the first time in the contest. Another make from deep by Beckett gave the team an 18-point advantage on the score board, 66-48, with 10 minutes left in regulation. Brockport was able to maintain control of the game down the stretch, marching to the 15-point victory on the road.
Next up the Green and Gold travel south to Daytona Beach, FL to compete at the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, hosted by DME Academy. The first matchup of the event is set for 12pm on Sunday, December 18th against MCLA.
