PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women’s basketball team hosted Elmira College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals put on a dominant display against the Soaring Eagles, taking the win 116-23. Saturday’s result sees the Cardinals increase their record to an overall record of 6-2 and a conference record of 2-0.
The Cardinals started out strong, with Emilia Johnson scoring the first three-pointer of the game, in the first minute. Two good free throws by Katie Moravec, saw the Cardinals increase their lead. Shortly after, Elmira gained their first points of the game. The teams went back and forth until the fifth minute, when Fisher started a 25-point run that would carry into the second quarter. It started with Kaitlyn Walker free-throw makes, and continued with three-pointers by Presleigh Brunner, Johnson and Emily McLaughlin. The first quarter ended in Fisher’s favor, with the Cardinals leading 34-4.
12 more points in the beginning of the second quarter turned the run into 37 unanswered points, led by Claire Kruszka’s made three-pointer in the first minute of the quarter. Sidney Tomasso picked back up for the Cardinal’s, scoring two free throws shortly after the Soaring Eagle’s made layup. The two teams went back and forth with free throws until Ka. Moravec scored a good layup in the eighth minute. The half would end with the Cardinal’s leading 58-11.
The Cardinal’s scoring started early in the second half, with Tomasso scoring a layup eight seconds in. Elmira scored, and Fisher responded with a nine-point unanswered run, started by Tomasso’s two good free throws. The Cardinals outscored the opposition 27-8 in the third frame and they did not let up in the final quarter.
Walker started the fourth strong, shooting two good free throws, 20 seconds in. The teams then each scored until the Soaring Eagles scored their final points with seven minutes left to play. What came next was another 25-point run that secured the Cardinal’s their win in a dominant 116-23 performance.
Leading for the Cardinals was Tomasso, scoring 23 points, collecting three assists, and two rebounds. Johnson was a strong contributor, scoring eleven points, and tallying three assists, and five rebounds. Leading in assists, for the Cardinals, was Kruszka, who had seven assists, ten points, and five steals. Rebound leader, Walker, was a standout, having seven rebounds, eleven points, and three assists.
The Cardinals play next on Friday, Dec. 9 as they take on Clarkson University on the road. It is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start time.
