ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Kiara Anglin drew a crucial charge with 1.5 seconds remaining to help Nazareth hold onto a one-point lead and eventual 65-62 victory over Alfred University on Saturday. Freshman Brielle Reidinger scored a career-high 20 points (7-for-15) and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second double-double.
Nazareth moves to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in league play, while the Saxons drop to 3-3 and 0-2 in the Empire 8.
With the score 55 apiece in the fourth quarter, Reidinger scored the next six points of the game to give the Golden Flyers the 6-point cushion.
The Nazareth margin eventually dwindled to one point with Alfred having a chance to take the lead with the shot clock turned off, however, Anglin beat Alfred’s Gillian Flint to the spot and was able to draw an offensive foul with 1.5 second on the clock. After a foul on the other end, Madilann Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws for the 65-62 advantage. Following a timeout, the Saxons were able to get off a solid look at a 3-point attempt, but the shot went long. Johnson put in seven points and two assists on the day.
Chelsea Woodsum had seven of the first nine points in the game for the Golden Flyers to help take a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. She finished the game with nine points.
Jadyn Abrams scored two of her 10 first half points on a layup at the 5:27 mark of the second quarter which gave Nazareth the lead at 23-22. Abrams ended the day with 17 points on 5-for-14 from the floor, while dishing out three assists.
Nazareth scored the last five points of the half, a 3-pointer from Katie MacLachlan and a jumper from Reidinger and it was an eight-point lead at the half for Nazareth, 37-29.
At the 4:15 mark of the third, Alfred was within a point, but Reidinger converted a traditional 3-point play to give Nazareth a 47-43 lead.
Alfred took the lead at 50-49, but that was short-lived as Reidinger found Kiara Anglin for a triple. Nazareth led 54-52 heading into the fourth.
Nazareth will not play again until December 19, when it will take on Thiel College at 6 p.m. at the Maura Panaggio Classic in Daytona, Florida.
