AMHERST, N.Y. – A game-high 32 points from Buffalo sophomore Curtis Jones keyed the Bulls to an 83-66 victory over the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
Yann Farell registered a career-high 18 points along with nine rebounds for the Bonnies. Daryl Banks III added 16 points and four assists. Kyrell Luc and Moses Flowers gave Bona four players in double figures as both players chipped in with 10 points and three dimes.
Buffalo (4-4) opened the game hot and never truly cooled, shooting over 49 percent on the day and holding a 39-32 edge on the glass.
The hosts started the game on a 17-7 run, but the Bonnies answered with a 9-0 break of their own to get back within a point, ultimately taking their first lead on an up-and-under from Max Amadasun.
Ahead a point 12 and a half minutes into the game, Bona’s edge would be short-lived as Buffalo would answer with the next 10 points to sprint back in front.
UB started 0-for-9 from deep, but connected on four of its next five tries to extend its lead out to 11.
The Bonnies would chip away, aided by six points off the bench by Amadasun, to get within 37-31 at the break.
Bona took some of the momentum it finished the first half with and carried that out of the locker room, closing to a 41-38 gap two and a half minutes into the second period. Buffalo then embarked on another push, though, to take a nine-point lead once more at the first media timeout of the stanza.
For much of the second half, UB seemingly had the game in hand, but the Bonnies continued to remain within 10.
The Bonnies made things truly interesting following back-to-back buckets from Farell, narrowing the deficit to just 63-57 with still 5:14 to go.
Following a timeout, however, Buffalo would ice the game with a 9-0 run.
Jones finished the day 13-for-22 from the floor and hit five three-pointers, more than five entire teams have against the Bonnies already this season. Yazid Powell added 23 points and eight boards for the Bulls.
