Gananda and Byron-Bergen to meet with regional spot on the line

A spot in the New York State Girls’ Class C Far West Regional is up for grabs when Gananda and Byron-Bergen meet Tuesday night. Here’s what you need to know:

Class C1 champion GANANDA BLUE PANTHERS (20-0-0/Wayne County) vs. Class C2 champion BYRON-BERGEN BEES (20-0-0/Genesee Region Division 2)

How they arrived here: Gananda (No. 5 NYSSWA Class C) opened the postseason with wins over No. 16 seed Sodus and No. 8 Williamson. The Blue Panthers then defeated No. 4 seed Marcus Whitman and claimed the first championship in program history with a 3-1 win over No. 3 Holley.  Byron-Bergen (No. 2 NYSSWA Class C) started with wins over No. 16 seed Perry and No. 8 Cuba Rushford/Hinsdale before beating No. 4 seed Warsaw, 6-0 and Wheatland-Chili, 2-0 for a second straight C2 title.

Total goals scored: Gananda (107), Byron-Berge (131)

Total goals allowed: Gananda (10), Byron-Bergen (3)

Trends: Gananda has surrendered one goal in the past games. Byron-Bergen has shut out its last eight opponents.

Players to Watch for Gananda: Isabella Hoffmann So. M/F 32 goals, 18 assists; Ella Lathrop So. M/F 25 goals, 18 assists; Nicole Cruz Jr. M/F 19 goals, 10 assists; Lyndsey Valletta Sr. GK/F 77 saves, eight goals allowed, 1,572 minutes in goal; Katie Rothwell Jr. D/M seven goals, 10 assists; Aly Cruz So. M/F seven goals, three assists; Nyah Cruz Jr. Center Back one goal, two assists.

Byron-Bergen: Mia Gray Fr. M 41 goals, 24 assists; Ava Gray So. D three goals, seven assists; Novalee Pocock Jr. GK 54 saves, three goals allowed, 13111 minutes in goal; Mackenzie Hagen Jr. F 29 goals, 19 assists; Emma Starowitz Jr. F 15 goals, 21 assists; Elizabeth Starowitz Fr. M 16 goals, 10 assists; Kendall Phillips Sr. M nine goals, five assists.

Coaches: Emily Slentz (Gananda), Wayne Hill (Byron-Bergen)

History 101: Gananda is looking to make its first trip to regionals in program history. Byron-Bergen wants to make a second straight trip to the state quarterfinals.

What’s next: The winner will face Section VI champion Frewsburg (18-0-0) in the New York State Girls’ Class C Far West Regional.

A 6:30 p.m. start time is scheduled at Webster Schroeder High School.
