Former Niagara University and Hofstra University head men’s basketball coach Joe Mihalich will be presented with the 2022 Jim Satalin Inspiration Award by the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer program on Monday, Aug. 29 at Bartlett Country Club in Olean, N.Y., at the conclusion of the Coaches vs. Cancer 716 Golf Classic.
The Jim Satalin Inspiration Award is named in honor of the former St. Bonaventure University head men’s basketball coach and student-athlete who was instrumental in the creation and expansion of the Coaches vs. Cancer program that has raised more than $130 million to date. A Syracuse native, Satalin served as the national director of Coaches vs. Cancer, and remains a member of the prestigious national CVC Council. This award is given annually to an outstanding, sports-minded individual who has assisted the American Cancer Society in their mission to save lives, celebrate lives and lead the fight for a world without cancer through the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative in Western New York.
During this golf invitational at the scenic Bartlett Country Club, NCAA Division I men’s basketball coaches from across the region and a number of media analysts will participate in a golf tournament, followed by the awards reception. The tournament will feature more than 30 golf foursomes, and 200 attendees are expected to attend the dinner reception.
The reception will be highlighted by keynote speaker, 2004 Associated Press Coach of the Year, Phil Martelli, who is currently a member of the coaching staff at the University of Michigan, is a past president of the National CVC Council, and 2021 recipient of the American Cancer Society St. George National Award given to outstanding community volunteers in recognition of their distinguished service to the American Cancer Society (ACS). This past year, there are only 13 awards being presented nationally. Recipients were chosen based on their continuous leadership, commitment, and dedication to impact the ACS mission.
Funds raised from this event will benefit the American Cancer Society in direct support of cancer research being conducted across Western New York.
