June 3, 2022 by Paul Gotham Leave a Comment

WAYLAND, N.Y. — Gaige Armbrewster delivered the go-ahead run with a two-out triple in the third, and Oakfield-Alabama defeated Bolivar-Richburg, 6-2 to win for the third time in four days and clinch a spot in regionals for the first time in more than a decade.

Armbrewster plated Aiden Warner with the eventual game winner as the Hornets would send 11 to the plate in the decisive inning.

Bodie Hyde struck out nine and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk to pick up the win. Hyde finished 4-for-4 at the plate and led the third with a single and scored the tying run on Brayden Smith’s RBI ground out. The sophomore worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fifth and retired eight of the last 10 batters he faced.

Smith also singled and drove in two runs. Colton Yasses singled and scored for O-A. Kyle Porter reached base twice and drove in a run. Kaden Cusmano went 1-for-2, reached on a hit by pitch and scored a run. David Schnaufer also crossed home.

Oakfield-Alabama (18-3) advances to the NYS Far West Regionals for the first time since 2009. The Hornets will play Portville (VI) on Saturday. A 5 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at Monroe Community College. Online tickets only are available for the game and can be purchased here.

Bolivar-Richburg’s Landon Danaher struck out three and hurled 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The Section V Class C2 Player of the Year also finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Evan Pinney went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Wolverines. Reiss Gaines and Ethan Childs had a base hit apiece. Bolivar-Richburg (22-2) won its fourth straight sectional title to reach Friday’s qualifier.
