The St. John Fisher College baseball team celebrated its senior day on Sunday with a pair of wins as the Cardinals closed out their conference slate with a sweep of Keuka College at Dugan Yard. With the wins, Fisher, which has wrapped up the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and the right to host the postseason tournament, improved to 26-12 overall and 18-2 in league play while the Wolves fell to 15-19-1 and 7-12-1, respectively.
FISHER 8, KEUKA 0
After stranding a pair of runners in the top of the first, Keuka was unable to string together a quiet inning as Noah Campanelli led off the home half of the frame with a walk before coming around to score two hitters later when Michael Beimel lifted a sacrifice fly to center that made it 1-0.
With one run in, Fisher added to its lead in the bottom of the second with two more runs on two hits after Campanelli came through with a two-out, two-run single up the middle that gave the home team a three-run cushion.
In the third inning, Beimel and Brian Norsen each singled before Luke Duffy loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. With one out on the board, James Murphy drew a walk and earned an RBI before Jack Kelleher lifted a single to right that plated a pair and made it 6-0. From there, Jimmy McCardle stepped in with a runner 90 feet away and belted a sacrifice fly to right before the Wolves could retire the side.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Cardinals tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Lemire doubled in Ben Lavery who had worked a walk earlier in the inning.
Connor McHugh was the pitcher of record as the junior moved to 6-1 on the year after holding the Wolves scoreless over five innings. McHugh allowed three hits and finished with two strikeouts before being relieved by Jason Wall who gave up one hit in an inning. Tim Geissel pitched the seventh inning and did not allow a run.
FISHER 16, KEUKA 6 (SEVEN INNINGS)
The Cardinals set the tone early after Campanelli led off the bottom of the first with a triple down the right field line before scoring the game’s first run after Lavery drove him in with a single up the gut. Leading by a run, Beimel drilled an RBI-double before Norsen plated another run with a single through the left side. With three runs in, Fisher padded its lead as Adam Riter reached on an error that allowed Norsen to score before the third out was made.
The lead would grow to five runs after back-to-back doubles from Campanelli and Lavery in the second inning before Keuka got two runs back in the top of the fourth with a pair of hits and a Fisher error.
Holding a three-run edge, Fisher hung six runs on the Wolves on four hits in the bottom of the fourth with Jake Meeker and Campanelli each driving in a pair before the visitors could escape the inning.
Both teams saw their offenses clicking in the fifth inning with Keuka scoring four runs on five hits before giving four runs back in the home half of the inning including a two-run shot well over the left field fence from Norsen that staked Fisher to a 14-6 margin.
Following a scoreless sixth, Fisher needed just three hitters to put the game away in the bottom of the seventh as Meeker reached on a dropped fly ball before scoring on a single from McCardle. With the winning run on base, Campanelli stepped in and laced his third extra base hit of the game with a walkoff RBI-double to left.
In all, Fisher mashed 19 hits in the win led by Campanelli who was 4-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and three RBI. Lemire was 3-for-5 in the win while Lavery was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Norsen had two hits in four at-bats including the home run and three RBI while both Meeker and McCardle had two hits each.
Michael Poirier pitched the first inning before giving way to Ryan O’Mara who moved to 6-0 on the year after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings. Logan Persse recorded two outs including one via strikes while Kenneth Westbrook and Joseph Tronetti combined to throw two shut out frames in all.
The Cardinals are scheduled to conclude their regular season schedule at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at nationally-ranked Oswego State.
