ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rush-Henrietta (5-5) sent nine to the plate in a five-run first inning, and Kadyn Hartel made the lead stand as the Royal Comets defeated Churchville-Chili, 6-2 in Section V Softball action on Thursday.
Hartel led with the first of five hits in the frame. Olivia Sheffer doubled and drove in Hartel with the first run, and Carly Sobaszek also singled and scored a run in the inning.
“I feel like our energy today was the difference,” said Sobaszek who went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored. “That’s what we do to keep each other up and keep the runs coming.”
Elizabeth Gleghorn and Sammi Genazzio also singled and scored in the first.
“It feels good,” Sobaszek said of the win. “We worked hard. I’m proud of everyone.”
Hartel struck out 11 in a complete-game performance for her fifth win of the season. The ninth-grade right-hander retired the first six batters she faced and nine of 10 to start the game.

“My spots were working really well and my speed obviously too,” Hartel said. “I was able to go to my off-speed when there was one strike or if the batter was fouling it off. That worked too.”

Churchville’s Alexa Briggs and Malena Leastman led the fourth inning with back-to-back base hits. Bailey DiGiacomo brought in Briggs with an RBI groundout and and Leastman scored on an error, but Hartel was able to limit the Saints to two runs.
“I don’t have to worry about getting so many hits off me because I have a great defense behind me,” Hartel stated. “I can trust them.”
C-C put two runners on in the fifth and another in the sixth. Hartel kept the Saints from scoring in those frames.
“She puts in the work every game,” Sobaszek said of Hartel. “I’m so proud of her. She does amazing on the mound. She puts in that work, and we’re here to defend for her.”
