On a rehab assignment, former McQuaid Jesuit standout Greg Cullen opened the 2022 baseball season Tuesday night with the Delmarva Shorebirds of the Class A Carolina League.
Hitting out of the leadoff spot, Cullen collected a single, walk and a run scored in an 8-3 Delmarva victory.
Cullen had been placed on the seven-day injured on April 8th.
The middle infielder appeared in 38 games a season ago including 24 with the Bowie Baysox of the Double-A Eastern League. Cullen had 14 hits and 19 walks with Bowie.
He played with Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League where he finished with 12 hits in 43 at-bats and slashed at .279/.400/.535 and had an OPS of .935.
Cullen was taken in the 15th round of the 2018 draft by the Atlanta Braves. Over his first two professional seasons, the 5-foot-10 second baseman accumulated 185 hits in 678 at-bats (.273 batting average) with the Danville and Rome Braves, including 35 doubles, 11 homers and nine triples.
He was traded to the Orioles in November of 2020 as part of the deal that sent Tommy Milone to Atlanta.
During his junior season at Niagara University, Cullen led the nation with a .458 batting average. He finished with 17 doubles, three triples and four home runs and stole 13 bases as well. He garnered second-team All America for his efforts.
A First Team All-State performer at McQuaid, he helped lead the Jesuit Knights to the 2015 sectional title.
