The Men’s Room Championship Preview: Caledonia-Mumford and York to clash for Boys’ C3 crown

Caledonia-Mumford’s head coach Dan Dickens has said that he would be retiring at the end of this season. The last thing standing in his way of a storybook ending for the storied coach are long-time York Knights. Livingston County AA foes will meet to decide the 2022 Class C3 Sectional Championship. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 2 seed CALEDONIA-MUMFORD RAIDERS (17-5/Livingston County III) vs. No. 4 seed YORK KNIGHTS (16-6/Livingston County III)

Scoring offense: Cal-Mum (69.9 PPG), York (66.6 PPG)

Scoring defense: Cal-Mum (50.5 PAPG), York (53.2 PAPG)

Current streak: Cal-Mum has won three of four game and six of its past eight; York has won four in a row.

How they arrived here: Caledonia-Mumford defeated No. 7 seed Red Creek in the first round, 81-43. The Raiders then took down No. 3 seed Dundee/Bradford by a score of 82-67 in the semifinals.  York faced No. 5 seed Bolivar-Richburg in the quarterfinals and won, 81-70. In the second round, they knocked off No. 1 seed Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, winning 70-61.

Last time(s) they met: Cal-Mum and York have squared off three times this season, with York taking 2 of the 3 victories. On December 30th, Cal-Mum notched a 72-48 win. On January 21st, York squeaked out a 66-65 victory. On February 8th, York won again, this time 71-54.

Caledonia-Mumford: Kyle Wade Sr. 22.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 4.7 APG, 1,325 career points; Scott Essig Sr. 16.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG; Evan Raniewicz Sr. 11.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.5 APG; Alex Carnes Sr. 8.3 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.6 SPG; Nate Doll So. 4.0 PPG 5.2 RPG and Cam Reed– Sr., 3.3 PPG 3.2 RPG 4.3 APG 1.5 SPG.

History 101: Caledonia-Mumford and York have faced off each other in the past three sectional tournaments. In 2021, the rivals met in the C2 semifinals. Cal-Mum won 76-61. The two years prior to that, they met in the C3 championship. Caledonia-Mumford won both games by scores of 72-43 in 2020 and 57-46 in 2019. Caledonia-Mumford has won three championships since 2015. Prior to that, the Raiders took the Class B title in 1979. York has won two sectional titles: 2012 and 1939. York is making its sixth finals appearance since 2012.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Sub-Regional against the winner of the C2 championship (Lyons vs. Oakfield-Alabama)

A 7 p.m. tipoff is scheduled Friday at Dansville High School.
