Section V Boys’ Basketball tips off the 2021-22 season on November 26th. Here are the season previews for Brockport, Canandaigua, Greece Arcadia, Greece Athena, Pittsford Mendon and Pittsford Sutherland:
BROCKPORT BLUE DEVILS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 3-9, lost in Class A1 sectional quarterfinals to Webster Thomas
Coach: James Erbland (10th season overall, First Varsity season)
Top returners: Peter Leicht Jr. G
Top newcomers: Kaeden Laureano Jr. G; Francis Nwokonko Jr. G; Justin Sillen Jr. G; Bryce Tyndell Sr. C
Outlook: “The Blue Devils are replacing all starters from the Winter 2021 season. This year’s team has a lot of height, including tall, physical guards. Center Bryce Tyndell has returned to Brockport this school year and will give the team a much-needed inside scoring and rebounding presence. Point guard Nate Grego and his other senior teammates will be counted on to provide leadership to a team that has very little Varsity playing experience. As soon as this team can establish an offensive and defensive identity under first-year Varsity coach, James Erbland, this Brockport team will be a very tough out in Sectionals.”
First game: December 3rd at Spencerport at 7:30 p.m.

CANANDAIGUA BRAVES (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 5-6, lost in Class A1 sectional quarterfinals to Leadership Academy
Coach: Jimmy Davern (First season)
Top returners: Derek Andrews Sr. SG; Jack Bacon Sr. G; Micah Bennett Sr. C; Bryce Ceravalo Sr. PG; Nick Ferris Sr. C/F (Most blocks in program history); Kenyon Mahoney Sr. F (Led team in three-point field goals made last season); Callum Outhouse Sr. F
Top newcomers: Matthew Pawlicki Jr. PF; Nate Sheridan Jr. SG; Carter Sickles Jr. SF
Outlook: “We return our starting lineup from last year’s squad. Obviously, the basketball program hasn’t seen a ton of success the past four years, being just a year removed from a 1-19 season. However, we have a great group of boys and I believe we will be the surprise of Monroe County this year!”
First game: December 10th vs. Brockport at 7:15 p.m.
GREECE ARCADIA TITANS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 0-10, did not qualify for sectionals
Coach: Zachary Keller (Fourth season, 2-52 career record)
Top returners: Dana Bolger Sr. G; Michael Bolger Sr. F/G; Vincent Cacia Sr. G (10 PPG last season); Latrell Rowe Sr. F; Gabe Taylor Sr. G (15 PPG last season, 2020 All-County Second Team selectee)
Outlook: “As the Titans look to overcome recent struggles and turn a corner, they are buoyed by strong senior leadership. Third-year starters Gabe Taylor and Vinnie Cacia are joined by returning starters Dana Bolger, Mike Bolger and Latrell Rowe. The Titans’ success will hinge largely on senior leadership, team chemistry and strong play from their underclassmen.”
First game: December 3rd vs. Greece Odyssey at Spencerport High School at 5:30 p.m.
GREECE ATHENA TROJANS (Class A2)
Last season record and finish: 8-4, lost in Class A2 sectional semifinals to East High
Coach: Michael Setzer (Sixth season, 76-27 career record)
Top returners: Marco DeRubeis Sr. C/F (Led team in field goal percentage last season); Jahon Jones Sr. G (Second on team in assists and deflections, Third in assist-to-turnover ratio, rebounds and steals last season); Frankie Oropeza Sr. G (39 percent 3P, Third on team in free throw percentage, Fourth in three-pointers made last season); James Reaves, Jr. Sr. G (Second on team in three-pointers made, Third in scoring with 9.4 PPG and plus-minus last season); Izaiah Stewart Sr. G (Led team in taken charges, Second in assist-to-turnover ratio, Third in assists, free throw percentage and three-pointers made last season); Terrell Wilson Sr. C/F
Top newcomers: Jovon Barfield Jr. G (Greece Olympia transfer); Connor Osier So. F (Led Junior Varsity in rebounds last season); Khorie Reaves So. G (Led Junior Varsity in scoring last season)
Outlook: “The Trojans graduated seven players from last year, including their top two leading scorers and rebounders and their assist and steals leader. However, all six seniors this year are primed to be in the rotation. They are a fast team that will be tough in transition. They will need to improve on rebounding this year since both starting forwards from last season graduated. Their keys to success are sharing the ball and making the extra pass, defensive rotations and boxing out and improving team chemistry and culture.”
First game: December 3rd vs. Edison Tech at the Aquinas Institute at 6 p.m.
PITTSFORD MENDON VIKINGS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 15-0, won Class A1 sectional title over Irondequoit
Coach: Robert Nally (Seventh season, 95-34 career record)
Top returners: Jackson Green Jr. G (15 PPG, All-County First Team, All-State honors last season); Eric Krowl Sr. F (4 PPG last season); Caleb Lewis Jr. G (8 PPG last season); Kidder Lindley Sr. G (7 PPG last season); Conner Rook Sr. F; Tyler Shadders Sr. G
Top newcomers: Ryan Deuel So. G; London Hoyser Jr. G; Matthew Woods Jr. G
Outlook: “We return six players from last year’s sectional championship run. If we are going to be able to build on last year’s success, those players will need to set the tone early for this team. We have a good mix of size and athleticism and if we come together, we can be really good on both ends of the floor.”
First game: December 7th at Hilton at 7:15 p.m.
PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (Class A2)
Last season record and finish: 5-8, lost in Class A2 sectional quarterfinals to East High
Coach: John Nally (22nd season, 284-163 career record)
Top returners: Tyler Mullin Sr. G; Sam Pisanelli Jr. G
Top newcomers: Chandler Reynolds Jr. G; Everett Wilcox Jr. PG
Outlook: “The team is small, young and inexperienced. Last year’s Junior Varsity squad will come in and play a lot of minutes. Pisanelli and Mullin are the only guys back who got significant Varsity minutes last year. We’ll have to shoot well to compete. Defensively, our size is a challenge. We’re going to have some matchup issues. We’ll have to find a way to rebound, too.”
First game: December 8th vs. Penfield at 7:15 p.m.
