The final weekend of the 2021 high school soccer season will see four Section V girls’ teams competing in the New York State semi-finals. Penfield will take on Massapequa in Class AA. Spencerport will battle Southside in Class A while Byron-Bergen will face Carle Place in Class C, and Fillmore faces Mount Academy in Class D. Here is the breakdown:
Class AA: Saturday, Nov. 13, 12:30 PM at Tompkins Cortland Community College
PENFIELD PATRIOTS (17-1-1/Monroe County Division I/) vs. MASSAPEQUA CHIEFS (18-0-1/Section VIII)
How they arrived here: Penfield (No. 5 NYSSWA Class AA) opened with a 3-0 win over No. 4 seed Hilton in the semifinals and advanced on PKs after playing to a draw with Fairport in the Class AA finals. Penfield defeated Lancaster (VI), 1-0 in the Far West Regional.
Top-seeded Massapequa (No. 1 – NYSSWA Class AA) opened the post-season with a 6-nil win over Herricks before beating Plainview JFK (1-0) in the semi-finals and Syosset (3-1) in the finals. The Chiefs edged Smithtown West, 2-1 to reach the state semis.

Players to Watch for Massapequa: Riley Benito six goals, six assists; Lia Howard 15 goals, 27 assists; Jessica Lynskey seven goals, five assists; Thalia Morisi seven goals, 10 assists, Briana Neary 12 goals, three assists; Gianna Savella 21 goals, 12 assists; Mary Stork GK 76 saves.
History 101: Massapequa has won four NYS Class AA titles since 2010 and seven overall. Penfield is appearing in the state semi-final for the first time since 2009.
What’s at stake: A spot in Sunday’s NYS Class AA final against the Arlington (I) vs. Shenendehowa (II) winner.
Class A: Saturday, Nov. 13, 5:30 PM at Tompkins Cortland Community College
SPENCERPORT RANGERS (19-0-1/Monroe County Division II) vs. SOUTH SIDE CYCLONES (13-3-2/Section VIII)
How they arrived here: Spencerport (No. 3 NYSSWA Class A) opened with an 8-0 win over No. 8 seed Irondequoit in the quarterfinals, defeated No. 4 Our Lady of Mercy in the semifinals, No. 2 Brighton in the Class A1 finals and Pittsford Mendon in the regional qualifier. Spencerport beat Grand Island in the Far West Regional Championship.
South Side (No. 2 NYSSWA Class A) opened the post-season with an 8-0 win over Long Beach before beating Wantagh (5-0), Garden City (1-0) and Manhasset (2-0) to reach the Long Island Regional Championship where the Cyclones edged East Islip, 2-1.

History 101: Spencerport shared the 2017 NYS Class A title and claimed the 2016 championship outright. South Side won back-to-back NYS titles in 2011-12 and nine overall since 2000.
What’s at stake: A spot in Sunday’s NYS Class A final against the Clarkstown North (I) vs. NewHartford (III) winner.
Class C: Saturday, Nov. 13, 10 AM at Homer High School
BYRON-BERGEN BEES (19-3-0/Genesee County Division I) vs. CARLE PLACE FROGS (8-4-1/ Section VIII)
How they arrived here: Byron-Bergen (No. 9 NYSSWA Class C) opened with an 8-0 win over No. 15 seed Red Jacket in the first round before moving on to beat No. 7 seed Campbell-Savona (2-0), No. 6 seed Bishop Kearney/Chesterton, 5-2, in the semifinals and HAC, 5-1 in the finals. The Bees handed Warsaw its first loss of the season in the regional qualifier before beating Frewsburg (VI) in the Far West Regionals.
Carle Place beat Port Jefferson, 7-1 to win the program’s first Long Island Championship in school history and advanced to the state semi-finals with a 7-2 win over SS Seward (IX).

Class D: Saturday, Nov. 13, 3 PM at Cortland High School
FILLMORE EAGLES (21-0-0/Allegany County Division I) vs. MOUNT ACADEMY EAGLES (16-1-1/Section IX)
How they arrived here: Fillmore (No. 2 NYSSWA Class D) opened sectionals with a 7-0 win over South Seneca before beating Honeoye (4-0), Marion (4-0) and Batavia-Notre Dame (5-0) to clinch a spot in regionals. Fillmore defeated Ellitcottville (2-0) to clinch a spot in the state semi-finals.
Mount Academy (No. 3 NYSSWA Class D) defeated Elmore, 4-0 in the Section IX Class D championship game before scoring five goals in the second half to defeat Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville, 5-0 in regionals.

Players to Watch for Mount Academy: Tamra Ben-Eliezer; Esther Blough; Corah Boller GK; Lark Gneiting and Brooke Huleatt.
History 101: Mount Academy is in its third year of the program’s existence. Fillmore is making its first trip to the state semi-finals.
What’s at stake: A spot in Sunday’s NYS Class D final against the Poland (III) vs. Chateaugay (X) winner.
