With sectional championships in the past, teams turn their focus on a state title. The next step in that climb occurs this weekend with five Section V teams taking to the pitch in the New York State Far West Regionals. Here’s the breakdown:
Class C: Friday, Nov. 5, 5 PM at Williamsville South High School
KESHEQUA INDIANS (Livingston County Division 3/18-2-0)
vs.
MAPLE GROVE RED DRAGONS (Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division II Central/15-2-0)
How they arrived here: Keshequa (No. 6 NYSSWA Class C) opened sectionals with a 4-1 win over No. 8 seed Byron-Bergen/Elba before beating Bolivar-Richburg (7-0), Kendall (4-0) and Williamson (4-0). Third-seeded Maple Grove (No. 7 NYSSWA Class C) defeated Westfield-Brocton in the Section VI Class C quarter-finals. The Red Dragons bested Portville (4-0) in the semi-finals and Lafayette International (3-1) in the finals.

HILTON CADETS (Monroe County Division I/17-1-1)

WILLIAMSVILLE NORTH SPARTANS (Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division I/15-1-1)
How they arrived here: Hilton (No. 6 NYSSWA Class AA) opened with a 4-0 win over No. 7 seed Rush-Henrietta before defeating reigning sectional champion Penfield in the semi-finals and Fairport in the Class AA finals. Top-seeded Williamsville North (No. 2 NYSSWA Class AA) topped Orchard Park (1-0) and beat Clarence (2-1) in the Section VI Class AA finals.

FILLMORE EAGLES (Allegany County Division 1/18-2-0)

ELLICOTTVILLE EAGLES (Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association/5-10-2)
How they arrived here: Fillmore (No. 6 NYSSWA Class D) started sectionals with a 3-nil win over Mount Morris before going on to top Wheatland-Chili (2-1), Arkport/Canaseraga (2-0) and C.G. Finney (1-0) to reach the state quarter-finals. Ellicottville (No. 11 NYSSWA Class D) defeated North Collins (2-1) in the Section VI Class D final.

When they last met: Fillmore defeated Ellicottville twice during the regular seasons by scores of 10-1 and 6-1.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class D semi-finals against the Chazy (VII) vs. Lisbon Central (X) winner.
Class B: Saturday, Nov. 6, 5:00 PM at Williamsville South High School
BATH-HAVERLING RAMS (Livingston County Division 1/20-0-0)
vs.
EAST AURORA BLUE DEVILS (Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division III/17-2-1)
How they arrived here: Bath-Haverling (No. 3 NYSSWA Class B) opened sectionals with an 8-0 win over No. 8 seed Letchworth/Warsaw in the quarterfinals before moving on to defeat Bishop Kearney (4-2) in the semifinals and Wayland-Cohocton (9-2) in the finals. The Rams clinched a spot in Saturday’s regional with a 7-2 win over Hornell. Top-seeded East Aurora (No. 6 NYSSWA Class B) opened with a 7-0 win over Olean before downing City Honors (1-0) in the semi-finals and Lewiston-Porter (1-0) to win the Section VI B1 title. The Blue Devils beat Lackawanna (6-0) in the regional qualifier.

History 101: East Aurora came away a winner when these two teams met in the 2018 Far West Regional.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class B semi-finals against the Greenville (II) vs. Beekmantown (XII) winner.
Class A: Saturday, Nov. 6, 7:30 PM at Williamsville South High School
PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (Monroe County Division III/17-1-2)
vs.
WILLIAMSVILLE SOUTH BILLIES (Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division II/18-2-0)
How they arrived here: Pittsford Sutherland (No. 2 NYSSWA Class A) opened the post-season with a 4-0 win over No. 16 seed Greece Athena and advanced past Spencerport (3-1) before beating No. 4 Wayne in the semi-finals. and Churchville-Chili for a third straight sectional title. Williamsville South (No. 5 NYSSWA Class A) beat Iroquois (5-0) to open sectional play before besting Amherst (3-0) and Grand Island (5-0) for a third straight sectional title. The Billies downed Williamsville East (3-0) in the regional qualifier.

History 101: Pittsford Sutherland returns to the regionals for the first time since 2017 when the Knights advanced to the state semi-finals with a 3-1 win over East Aurora. Sutherland used overtime to defeat Williamsville South (2-1) in the 1999 Far West Regional.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class A semi-finals against the Maine-Endwell (IV) vs. Somers (I) winner.
