Etta Herman made a pair of saves, and Kacie Salva converted the decisive penalty kick as the Penfield girls’ soccer team advanced to the New York State Class AA Far West Regional in Section V action from Webster Schroeder High School, Saturday night. Salva was the fourth of the Patriots to connect on successful attempts.
“Coach beforehand told me while we we’re waiting at the line (center stripe) to look at the back corner of exactly where I want to shoot,” Salva said. “We’ve been practicing this for weeks on end. We keep drilling it in practice. I guess it worked. I told myself as I walked up, you got this, and I went for it.”

For the first time this season, the Spencerport girls’ soccer team saw a crooked number on the opposing team’s side of the scoreboard. That Brighton found the back of the net twice in the first 40 minutes might have been enough to shake a lesser team. But not the Spencerport Rangers. Aleena Solano and Alyssa Hackett scored two goals apiece while Lily Brongo collected four assists as Spencerport claimed its sixth straight sectional title. READ MORE.

Winning a program’s first sectional title in seven years is one thing. Being able to accomplish that feat over one’s cross-town rival, well that just adds to the enjoyment. Elena Barr connected on a free kick in the 56th minute with the match’s lone goal as the Pittsford Mendon girls claimed the 2021 Section V Class A2 championship. READ MORE.

Hope Russell scored a pair of goals, and Fillmore won its second sectional title in three years. Russell’s first tally of the day came late in the first half and gave the Eagles a 2-nil advantage heading into the break. Grace Russell started the scoring with an assist from Malory DeRock. Emily Krzeminski added a goal 13 minutes into the second half. Zoe Beardsley, Sophia Templeton and Rachel Hatch collected an assist apiece. Preslee Miller made five saves for the shutout. Hope Russell leads Fillmore with 34 goals on the season. Fillmore will play Class D2 champion Notre Dame-Batavia in the regional qualifier.

Autumn Mathisen netted three goals to lead Notre Dame-Batavia to its second straight sectional title. Mathisen’s unassisted effort gave the Fighting Irish a 1-0 lead at halftime. The junior forward added another tally early in the second half before teammate Maylee Green contributed to the scoring. Batavia-ND eventually led 4-0. Hannah Tenney had one assist. Rebeka Nickerson made five saves for Batavia-ND. Teammate Sofia Falleti stopped one shot. Shannon Sullivan scored the lone Avoca/Prattsburgh goal with an assist from Olivia Kilmer. Batavia-Notre Dame will play Class D1 champion in the regional qualifier.
BOYS
CLASS B1

For 65 minutes, Hornell’s boys soccer team controlled play in the Class B1 final against Palmyra-Macedon with nothing to show for it. Hornell had a couple of good chances in the first half but Pal-Mac senior keeper Robert Kinsman made a couple of huge stops to leave the game scoreless at half. READ MORE.

Before the midway point of the first half, the Rams had built a 4-0 lead. Ezra Hoad set up Zach Musso and five minutes later, DJ Smith hit Keefer Calkins flashing across the top of the box for his Section V leading 41st goal of the season. READ MORE.

John Niles netted a pair of goals, and Williamson won its first sectional title since 2013. Niles started the scoring early in the first half with an assist from Tyrone Walker. Rhett Storms gave the Marauders a two-goal heading into the break. Troy Ingham assisted on the goal from Storms. Niles and Walker combined midway through the second half on another tally. Ethan Bennett accounted for the lone Geneseo marker. Williamson will play Class C2 champion Keshequa in the regional qualifier.

Reese Powers collected two goals and an assist to lead Keshequa to its third straight sectional title. Powers had a hand in all three goals as the Indians grabbed a 3-nil lead in the first half. Avery Strobel started the scoring, and Ian Hinrich added the second-half tally. Strobel, Sterling Strain and Ryan Stevens each collected an assist. Keshequa will play Class C1 champion Williamson in the regional qualifier.

NO. 2 FILLMORE 2
In a rematch of last year’s semi-final that Fillmore won, Nooradeen Muzaid-Omar and Brent Zubikowski scored a goal apiece as the Eagles won their second sectional title in three years. Graham Cahill and Eben Schilke had an assist apiece. Fillmore will play Class D2 champion C.G. Finney in the regional qualifier.

Molly Seither and Maya Ikewood connected on second-half goals as Palmyra-Macedon won its third sectional title in six years and sixth overall in program history. Seither connected five minutes into the second stanza with an assist from Emma Robinson. Ikewood doubled the advantage 20 minutes later with help from Kylie Waeghe. Clare Boesel made five saves for the the shutout – Pal-Mac’s 14th clean sheet of the season. The Red Raiders will face Class B2 champion Bath-Haverling in Tuesday’s regional qualifier. The two teams met earlier this season with Bath-Haverling taking a 2-1 decision.

Keegan Smith finished with a goal and an assist to lead Bath-Haverling to its second straight sectional title and third in program history. Smith connected on an unassisted effort 20 minutes in the first half. The sophomore forward then assisted on Ella Yartym’s tally 10 minutes later. Lola Coots made three saves for the shutout – Bath-Haverling’s third straight clean sheet and 13th of the campaign. The Rams advance to play Class B1 champion, Palmyra-Macedon in the regional qualifier. Bath-Haverling defeated Pal-Mac, 2-1 when the teams met during the regular season.

Makaylah Higgins and Chloe Hubbard finished with a goal and an assist apiece as Warsaw claimed its second sectional title in three years and third overall in program history. Hubbard assisted on the tally from Higgins before finishing on her own unassisted effort. Higgins had the helper on Mattie Heim’s marker. Sarah Cox made three saves for the shutout. Warsaw will play Byron-Bergen in Tuesday’s regional qualifier.

Sophomore Mackenzie Hagen netted a hat trick while classmate Emma Starowitz had a goal and two assists as Byron-Bergen won its fifth sectional title in program history and first since 2002. Starowitz started the scoring in the 12th minute with an assist from eighth-grader Mia Gray. Gray scored 14 minutes later with help from Elizabeth Starowitz. Hagen connected twice more in the first half for the Bees. Brooke Jarkiewicz made three saves.

Sean Hopkins and his Pittsford Sutherland Knights set out this year looking to allow fewer than 10 total goals during the regular season, so it should come as no surprise when the Knights shut out one of the more prolific offenses in Section V. Octavio Gefell scored twice while Cosimo Ragionieri had a goal and two assists as C.G. Finney won its second sectional title in four years. Martin Helguera contributed an assist for the Falcons who will play Fillmore in the regional qualifier. Finney advanced to the 2018 New York State Class D semi-finals.
