Section V Boys’ Soccer gets into full swing this week. Here are the team previews for Brighton, Churchville-Chili, Gates-Chili, Irondequoit, Spencerport and Webster Thomas:
BRIGHTON BRUINS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 3-5-3, lost in Class A sectional quarterfinals to Churchville-Chili
Coach: Adam Hiller (11th season, 103-60-18 career record)
Top returners: Chase Alexandre Jr. MF; Daniel Barraclough-Tan Jr. MF; Cal Oberst Sr. GK; Adrian Storozynky Jr. A
Top newcomers: Matthew Picone So. D; Isaac Wing So. MF
Outlook: “With a mix of youth and returning players, it should be a fun year,” Hiller said. “Kids are just excited to have a full year of soccer!”
First game: September 2nd vs. Churchville-Chili at 7 p.m.
CHURCHVILLE-CHILI SAINTS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 9-3-2, lost in Class A sectional final to Pittsford Sutherland
Coach: John Mahoney (12th season, 113-65-17 career record)
Top returners: Moises Arrendale Jr. MF; Cameron Burke Sr. D; Gaven Egan Sr. MF (All-State honors); Nick Rippe Sr. A
Top newcomers: Andrew Berardicurti So. A; Quinn Hoak Jr. D
Outlook: “I think we have a good chance to be very good this fall,” Mahoney stated. “We return two starting senior goalkeepers, two starters on defense, a central midfield consisting of all Seniors and a mix of experience and youth up top. As with all teams, we’ll see how chemistry plays a part. Having Gaven Egan, who should be one of the best players in the state, gives us a chance in every game we play.”
First game: September 2nd at Brighton at 7 p.m.
GATES-CHILI SPARTANS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 4-13, lost in first round of Class AA sectionals to McQuaid
Coach: Jim Vanderhoof (Fifth season)
Top returners: Giovanni Buonomo Jr. MF; Owen Curley So. D; Jake Hamilton Sr. D
Top newcomers: Thomas DiMaggio 8th G. MF; Eli Speidel 8th G. A
Outlook: “Gates-Chili will look to continue building for the future using the tenacious work rate that has become its reputation around Section V,” Vanderhoof said. “This season, many newcomers to the Varsity level, including two eighth-graders, will compete each and every game proving that Gates-Chili will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.”
First game: September 2nd at Webster Thomas at 7:15 p.m.
IRONDEQUOIT EAGLES (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 3-7-3, lost in first round of Class A sectionals to Spencerport
Coach: Tom Gillett
First game: September 2nd vs. Spencerport at 4:30 p.m.
SPENCERPORT RANGERS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 8-3-1, lost in Class A sectional semifinals to Pittsford Sutherland
Coach: Jody Wyant (Third season, 21-5-2 career record)
Top returners: Sujan Rajamohan Sr. D; Joey Weaver Jr. MF
Outlook: “We hope to be competitive for the league and compete for a sectional title,” Wyant said.
First game: September 2nd at Irondequoit at 4:30 p.m.
WEBSTER THOMAS TITANS (Class A1)
Last season record and finish: 8-3-1, lost in first round of Class A sectionals to Aquinas
Coach: Steve Grose (20th season, 188-117-40 career record)
Top returners: Cole Hastings Jr. D (All-County Second Team); Ryan McLarney Sr. MF; Jack Rider Sr. D
Top newcomers: Cory Jarvis Jr. A; Jason Riek Jr. GK
Outlook: “Although we’re young with five combined freshmen and sophomores in our starting lineup, we’re skilled and equipped for solid midfield play,” Grose said. “We’re counting on senior Ryan McLarney and juniors Cole Hastings and Cory Jarvis.”
First game: September 2nd vs. Gates-Chili at 7:15 p.m.
