Jake Noll had a hand in many of the Rochester Red Wings’ successes on Friday night.
Rochester’s most consistent hitter had already recovered from a fielding error to throw out Albert Almora Jr. at the plate in the first inning before his dramatics at the plate. Noll slugged a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning, pulling the Red Wings ahead of Syracuse in a game they eventually won 6-3.
Red Wings starting pitcher Seth Romero allowed just four hits and a run in a four-inning Triple-A debut. A 2017 first round pick, Romero struck out five batters, including three of the last five men he faced, despite two walks.
Syracuse called for the rarely utilized double-steal when Khalil Lee and Wilfredo Tovar reached in the third; Tovar took second base while the speedy Lee crossed home plate. That small-ball display represented the Mets’ only score until the fifth, when singles from Almora Jr. and Lee set up Tovar’s sacrifice fly and a David Thompson RBI groundout.
Mets pitcher Adam Oller, who started his Triple-A career with 11.2 scoreless innings, shut out the Wings after Donovan Casey’s first-inning RBI single. Oller left in line for the victory, but Noll and Mike Ford recorded back-to-back homers off Yennsy Díaz.
Rochester added an insurance run in the ninth, sealing its fourth win in the first five games of the week-long series. Dakota Bacus, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings, was awarded the win, while Aaron Barrett closed the ninth for his second save.
The Red Wings and Mets are scheduled to meet again on Saturday evening at 6:35, when top Washington pitching prospect Cade Cavalli is expected to make his Triple-A debut.
