Penfield’s Gage Ziehl was named Prep Baseball Report New York State Player of the Year as announced by the online scouting service earlier this week.
Ziehl, the Section V Class AA Player of the Year, finished 2021 with a record of 5-0 and a save in leading Penfield to its first sectional title since 2012.
The University of Miami commit struck out 91 of the 135 batters he faced this season. He allowed one run on 10 hits and seven walks to finish with an ERA of 0.17. Opposing batters hit .079 against him.

Ziehl threw six shutout innings in Penfield’s season-opening win over Churchville-Chili. The 6-foot-1 right-hander capped the season with a one-hitter in the sectional championship game.
