The Rochester Red Wings fell behind from the beginning in Syracuse on Tuesday evening.
The last-place Mets, bolstered by major leaguers making rehab assignments, tagged Rochester starter Rogelio Armenteros with five runs in the first inning and won 9-5. Armenteros, who allowed just one run in 4.2 innings last Wednesday, labored through an eight-batter, 32-pitch first.
Brandon Nimmo, on a rehab assignment for a left hand injury, scored a leadoff walk and Tomas Nido, rehabbing a wrist ailment, singled. Khalil Lee sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score Nimmo, while Brandon Drury homered to left center on the next at bat.
Former Red Wing Wilfredo Tovar, who hadn’t hit a home run all season before last week, lifted a home run into the left field bullpen to extend the advantage to five.
Armenteros completed five innings but was lifted by Matt LeCroy after the first two batters reached in the sixth inning. He allowed seven earned runs on nine hits, walking three and recording four strikeouts. He has lost all five of his decisions this season.
Drury was just a triple shy of the cycle, reaching base all four plate appearances while scoring three runs and driving in two. Mason Williams doubled twice.
Yadiel Hernandez, Daniel Palka, Brandon Snyder and Armenteros himself recorded two hits apiece, and Snyder slammed two home runs, but Rochester never led.
The Red Wings’ night ended with a dubious strike-’em-out, throw-’em out double play, Jake Noll going down swinging before Palka was caught trying to steal second. The 20-29 Red Wings saw a five-game win streak snapped in defeat.
