The Rochester Red Wings hadn’t hoisted the Governor’s Cup since 1964, so their urgency to dispatch Syracuse and return to the championship series was palpable.
Syracuse was structuring fall 1971 vacation plans after the fifth inning thanks to two four-run frames from the powerful Red Wings, who ran away with an 11-2 victory and assured their spot in the final series against Tidewater.
Rochester starter George Manz threw a complete game, allowing two ninth- inning runs and scattering six hits while striking out four Chiefs.
“It wasn’t the best game I ever pitched,” Manz told the Democrat and Chronicle, “but it was the most important. If Syracuse had beaten us today our backs would have been to the wall.”
Manz supported himself with a two-run single in the second to extend Rochester’s advantage to 4-0, following a two-run double from Don Fazio. Fazio also keyed the four-run fourth, leading off the inning with a single and scoring on Rich Coggin’s single down the right field line. Don Baylor pounded a two-run double into the right-center field gap and scored the ninth run on a wild pitch.
Terry Crowley hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for emphasis. Syracuse could not stop Rochester’s offense, couldn’t solve Manz on the mound, and did not deter the Red Wings from the final.
“It was my biggest game ever,” Manz reiterated, “and if I pitch in the series against Tidewater, that one will be even bigger.”
