Bo Dodson’s lone season with the Rochester Red Wings featured eight home runs and two triples, neither number relatively high in the team’s lineup.
Fans who happened through the McCoy Stadium turnstiles on August 1, 1998 may have mistaken Dodson for Mark McGwire. Dodson recorded two of those home runs and a triple that day, powering Rochester to an 8-1 rout of Pawtucket.
The Red Wings had won just three of their last 27 games in Pawtucket. Dodson, who played with the PawSox the year before, opened the convincing victory with a two-run homer over the right field wall in the second inning that served as the game-winning hit in a game the Wings never trailed.
Dodson hadn’t tripled in three years before his RBI triple in the fifth. He and Jesse Garcia combined for five RBI and four runs scored on six hits in the seven and eight slots of the order, while Derek Lee also collected three hits in the victory.
Starter Jim Converse, who lost his first eight decisions of the season, recorded his second win in as many starts with six shutout innings. He scattered seven hits, striking out seven as the PawSox stranded a runner on base in each frame.
Pawtucket starter Juan Garcia wasn’t as fortunate, allowing seven runs and 13 hits over five innings.
“It felt real good tonight,” Converse commented to the Democrat and Chronicle. “It’s felt good since the All-Star break. I’m just trying to build on each outing and this was definitely one to build with.”
Dodson played his last minor league season in 1998, appearing in two seasons of independent ball in 1999 and 2004. He batted .276 for Rochester, hitting eight homers and driving in 48 runs in 116 games. The Red Wings, unable to defend their Governor’s Cup championship, compiled a 70-74 record and did not make the playoffs.
