At least Morton Brodsky didn’t promise to pay each Rochester Red Wing who scored a run on July 18, 1971. His checkbook would have suffered a bigger dent.
Brodsky, then the co-owner of the largest apartment development firm in upstate New York alongside his brother Samuel, upped the stakes for Rochester’s Sunday matinee against the Winnipeg Whips. Brodsky offered $10 for every Red Wings base hit and $25 for each home run.
All the Red Wings produced was 16 base hits and three homers, collecting $235 and their 52nd win of the season (52-39) in a 17-4 thrashing.
Terry Crowley hit his third home run in as many days while Jim Hutto and Rich Coggins each homered as well. Don Baylor singled twice, Bobby Grich tripled twice and the contest was well in hand by the third inning.
Winnipeg starting pitcher Mike Torrez was left to absorb the brunt of the offensive explosion, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits in four innings because the Whips’ bullpen had been overworked.
Hutto’s home run capped a five-run first inning, while the combination of two singles and four Torrez walks tallied on three more in the third. Doubles by Grich and Baylor and Crowley’s home run scored four more in the fourth, masking any effects of Winnipeg’s three-run sixth and subsequent run in the seventh.
Red Wings starter Bill Burbach benefited from the run support, throwing a complete game to extend his unbeaten streak to five decisions.
Between Crowley, Grich and Baylor, who each recorded three hits, the only question at Silver Stadium was which player was picking up the dinner check with his cash bonus.

Also on this day: Lloyd Fourroux hit a pinch-hit two run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over Richmond at Red Wings Stadium in 1967. The win put Rochester 1.5 games ahead of the Braves for first place in the International League.
