Section V Semifinals Preview: Boys’ Basketball Class A2

Section V Class A2 heads to Gates-Chili High School for its final four. Two of the top four seeds were eliminated, but the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds remain. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 EAST (19-2/RCAC Lower) vs. No. 5 PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND (13-8/Monroe County III): 6:30 PM, Wednesday, Gates-Chili High School

Scoring offense: East (82.3 PPG), Pittsford Sutherland (59.3 PPG)

Scoring defense: East (60.9 PPG), Pittsford Sutherland (54.1 PPG)

Current streak: East High has won six straight; Pittsford Sutherland has won three of four.

How they got here: East High cruised past No. 9 Wilson Magnet, 67-41, in the sectional quarterfinals, Saturday night.

Pittsford Sutherland gutted out a 50-47 quarterfinal win over No. 4 School of the Arts, Saturday afternoon.

Last time they met: Pittsford Sutherland defeated East, 53-49, in last year’s Class A2 sectional final.

Players to Watch for East: Zechariah Harris-Scott Sr. F 22.7 PPG, 1,083 career varsity points; Damani Barley So. G 14.8 PPG; Kaori Barley Sr. G 10.6 PPG

Pittsford Sutherland: Ben DiGiovanni Sr. F 15.7 PPG; Jalyn Moorehead So. G 13.8 PPG

Coaches: Darrell Barley (East), John Nally (Pittsford Sutherland)

What’s at stake: A spot in the Class A2 sectional final against the winner of Wayne/NE Douglass.

No. 3 WAYNE (19-2/Finger Lakes East) vs. No. 7 NE DOUGLASS (11-11/RCAC Lower): 8:15 PM, Wednesday, Gates-Chili High School

Scoring offense: Wayne (61.6 PPG), NE Douglass (69.6 PPG)

Scoring defense: Wayne (45.5 PPG), NE Douglass (68.9 PPG)

Current streak: Wayne has won five straight; NE Douglass has won three straight

How they got here: Nathan McKenna and Mason Blakenberg combined for 51 points and led Wayne to a 75-65 quarterfinals victory over No. 6 Honeoye Falls-Lima.

NE Douglass opened with a 91-60 win over No. 10 Monroe and took down No. 2 Northstar Christian, 69-65, behind Adonis Flagler and Lamar Lovelace combining for 50 points.

Last time they met: This will be the first meeting between the teams since March 3rd, 2018 in the Class A2 sectional final. Wayne came out on top, 57-54. Logan Blakenberg was named tournament MVP for Wayne. Nick Carmichael and Billy Thomson earned All-Tournament team honors. For NE Douglass, Adonis Flagler and Jiahmere Mitchell were named to the All-Tournament team.

Players to Watch for Wayne: Tyler Reynolds Jr. G 17.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.4 APG, 3.3 SPG; Mason Blakenberg So. G 13.1 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 5.7 APG, 1.5 SPG; Eli Schichtel Jr. F 9.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG

NE Douglass: Adonis Flagler Sr. F 25.9 PPG; Lamar Lovelace Sr. G 21.8 PPG; Trynzeir Parker Jr. G 12.8 PPG; Nicolas Jeanty Sr. F 10.7 PPG

Coaches: Bill Thomson (Wayne), Kyle Crandall (NE Douglass)

What’s at stake: A spot in the Class A2 sectional final against the winner of East/Pittsford Sutherland.
