Victor vs. Fairport: Section V Class A Hockey Finals Preview

RIT’s Gene Polisseni Center is the host of the Section V Class A Finals. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 VICTOR (19-3) vs. No. 2 FAIRPORT (18-3)

When: Sunday, March 1, at 3:30pm

How they got here: Victor bested Gates/Wayne/EI/Wheatland 4-2 in the quarter-finals and shut out Pittsford 3-0 in the semi-finals. Fairport blanked Brighton/HFL/ER 7-0 in the quarter-finals and downed McQuaid 1-0 in the semi-finals.

Previous Meetings: Victor and Fairport met twice in the regular season for a win apiece. Victor found success in their initial matchup, winning 2-1, but Fairport bested Victor 4-1 in the final game of the regular season.

How they match up: Victor finished the regular season first in both goals per game (4.65) and power play percentage (28.57 percent). Fairport is on a ten-game winning streak, losing most recently to Victor after their first regular season matchup. Fairport allowed the fewest goals in the regular season (1.26).

Players to watch: Victor: Seven skaters tallied more than 20 points in the regular season: Sam Bresson (10 goals, 17 assists), Jack McCandless (17 goals, 9 assists), Nick Peluso (8 goals, 18 assists), Steven Armstrong (16 goals, 9 assists), Cal Lambert (10 goals, 15 assists), Andrew Haugh (13 goals, 11 assists), and Alex Parton (4 goals, 19 assists).

Fairport: Dylan Ghaemi has a 1.000 save percentage this postseason, and registered five shutouts in the regular season. Sam Hoyen (9 goals, 18 assists) and Colin Herington (18 goals, 10 assists) sat atop Fairport’s team stats list at the end of the regular season.

Coaches: Michael Ferreri (Victor) and Chris Moretter (Fairport)

What’s at stake: The winner will play the Section III champion in the NYS quarter-finals.
