A day after downing Atlantic Hockey’s sixth place Bentley University 4-1 on Friday, the fourth place Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers improved on their performance with a 5-1 victory over the Falcons. Propelled by freshmen forward Elijah Gonsalves’ pair of goals and counterpart Caleb Moretz’s goal and two assists, RIT snagged its fourth win in five games.
Twenty seconds into the game, junior forward Nick Bruce opened scoring for the Tigers on a re-directed shot from senior defenseman Darren Brady.
Tied at one in the early moments of the second period, Moretz capitalized on a feed from senior defenseman Adam Brubacher to give RIT a lead it wouldn’t surrender. A minute later, Moretz found Gonsalves on the power-play for his first of the night, pushing the score to 3-1. The two would connect again late in the third period when Gonsalves buried his second of the night on an empty-net.
Six minutes into the third, the Tigers increased their lead to three on senior forward Shawn Cameron’s sixth power-play goal of the year. Cameron leads the team with 17 total goals. Junior forwards Alden Dupuis and Jake Hamacher both collected an assist on the play.
Bentley’s only offense came at the 3:45 mark in the first period when Jakov Novak evened the score at one. Connor Brassard and Brett Orr each picked up a helper.
Junior defenseman Dan Willett and Dupuis both finished with two assists while senior defenseman Brody Valette contributed one for the Tigers.
Junior netminder Logan Drackett made 28 saves for his 10th win of the year, two more than what was needed the night before.
RIT’s next matchup will be at Niagara on Friday, Feb. 21st. On Saturday, Feb. 22nd, the Tigers will host the Purple Eagles at home for their fourth-of-four matchups this season. RIT is currently 1-0-1 against Niagara.
