ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A swarming defense created 41 deflections and 22 steals as the Webster Schroeder girls basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 54-21 victory over Pittsford Sutherland.
Anya Watkins posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The junior also led the defense with 10 deflections to go with three steals.
Teammate Lill Northrup collected 10 points, six assists, 10 deflections and eight steals.
Julia Perales had seven deflections and six steals. Eighth-grader Mariah Watkins scored 12 points. Kaitlyn Brewer added six points. Olivia Reschke (4) and Sarah Ferruzza (2) also scored for Schroeder.
The Lady Warriors (8-6) limited Sutherland to single-digit points in each quarter and took a 26-11 lead into halftime before stretching the advantage to 44-18 after three stanzas.
Schroeder has won seven of nine with its only losses during that stretch coming to Gates-Chili (No. 10 NYSSWA Class AA) and Penfield (No. 20 NYSSWA Class AA).
Schroeder hosts divisional rival Hilton on Friday. A 7:15 PM start is scheduled. The Cadets took the first meeting between the two teams, 55-51.
Maley Garcia led Sutherland (4-11) with six points. Teammate Lara Brandt added four points. The Knights host Greece Olympia on Friday for a 7:30 PM tip off.
