ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It was a matter of formality. Thursday afternoon in front of family, friends, faculty, staff and fellow students, Bishop Kearney senior Nathan Carter signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at the University of Connecticut.
“It felt like a weight coming off my shoulders a little bit, just being able to finally sign,” Carter said after the ceremony. “It tells me all the hard work and dedication I’ve put in is really coming to show. I’m just so excited and ready to get going.”
The 5-foot-10-inch running back will graduate early from Kearney and enroll for spring classes at UConn.
“It allows you to acclimate to the college life a little,” he said about the decision to start his college career in January. “I’ll be able to participate in practices and workouts, spring ball.”
For BK head coach Rick Gause, Carter’s signing proved what he has always know about his player.

“He deserves everything and more. It’s just awesome. It’s awesome to see the process of hard work, consistency and perseverance.”
“He’s going to do well. He’s going to do some great things in that community.”
Carter took summer courses to get ahead on his class load. His final day at Kearney is Friday. He will, though, be on hand in June to take part in ceremonies with his classmates.
“It was challenging,” Carter said of the work to graduate early. “I thank Bishop Kearney for allowing me to do that because not a lot of schools, not a lot of people are allowed to graduate like I did.
“It’s going to be hard to walk away from that, but I know at the end of the day with all the love they’ve shown me I’ll be able to go forward. I’m going to be coming back for all the senior stuff. I’m definitely going to walk the stage. I want to walk the stage with all my seniors. I’m definitely going to do that.”
