
IRVINE, CA — Lauren Bernard and Kiara Zanon scored second-period goals while Marie Dedert posted a shutout as the No. 8 seed Selects Academy at BK 19U squad opened the 2019 Chipotle USA-Hockey Nationals with a 2-0 victory over the No. 9 seed Mid Fairfield Stars.
Zanon set up Bernard 4:39 into the second period for the game’s first goal. Less than 10 minutes later, Zanon converted on a short-handed situation when she took a Caroline Harvey pass and scored on a breakaway. The short-handed situation was one of four that Selects Academy faced in the game. Selects will play the host Anaheim Lady Ducks on Friday. An 11 AM (PST) puck drop is scheduled at the Great Park Ice and Sports Complex.

Laila Edwards scored twice including the game winner as Selects Academy at BK 16U came from behind to beat the Mid Fairfield Stars, 4-3 to open the National Championship. Edwards took a Sydney Wegner pass for an even-strength tally with 5:01 remaining in the game.
Trailing 3-2 going into the final period, Anna Stanton tied the game with 7:35 remaining.
Kirsten Simms scored 2:45 into the contest to give Selects an early 1-0 advantage. Edwards scored less than two minutes into the second period.
Mid Fairfield responded with three straight goals to grab a one-goal edge. Chloe Beringer, Casey Winslow and Morgann Skoda each scored for the Stars.
Selects 16U will play the Dallas Elite Stars in the next round. A 4:40 PM (PST) puck drop is slated.
