Thursday Wrap: Peters leads Newark rally; Miller’s 20-20 not enough

Class B1

No. 2 NEWARK (18-3) 59
No. 3 HORNELL (14-7) 48 OT
Mason VanDeMortel finished with 16 points, none more important than the two free throws the senior converted to send the game into overtime where Newark shut out Hronell to advance to the Class B1 finals. Newark trailed 40-34 to start the fourth quarter. The deficit was still two with 11.9 seconds remaining. Jayden Peters connected four times from 3-point land and scored a a team-high 26 points for Newark which will look to win its first sectional title since 2016. Devin Agosto added eight points and forced a key turnover late in the game. Kyle Martinez (4), Josh Green (3) and Nick Bernardi (2) rounded out the scoring for the Reds. Newark will face top-seeded Greece Odyssey in Saturday’s final. A 9 AM tip off is scheduled at Blue Cross Arena. Chase Freeland paced Hornell with 15 points. Jackson White contributed 14, and Timmy Smith had 12 points. Vinny Liberto (6) and Tanner Stutzman (1) also scored for Hornell which led 30-22 at halftime. The game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday. Weather forced the postponement.

 

Class B2

No. 3 WAYLAND-COHOCTON (13-9) 63
No. 7 MYNDERSE ACADEMY (11-12) 54
Darren Miller finished with 27 points and 21 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Wayland-Cohocton used a big second quarter to advance to the Class B2 finals. Connor Englert and Cameron Huber combined for 12 second-quarter points when the Eagles outscored Mynderse, 18-5 to take a 29-15 lead into the locker room. Huber finished with 12 points and shared team-high honors with DeAndre Green. Englert added 10. Jamie Carman chipped in 11 points. Derek Cheasman (6), Justin Horton (4) and Logan Brown (1) rounded out the scoring for Wayland-Cohocton which will meet top-seeded Wellsville in Saturday’s Class B2 final. An 11 AM tip off is scheduled. Miller connected 11 times from the floor and converted 5-of-8 free throws to lead Mynderse. Jake Smith Smith scored 12 for the Blue Devils. Jared King had nine, and Sal Franzone six. Mynderse outscored Wayland-Cohocton 22-19 in the third quarter. The game was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday. Weather forced the postponement.
