Section V Semifinal Preview: Boys’ Basketball Class C1

The top four seeds advanced in Class C1. Semifinals tip at Victor High, Monday night. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 MARCUS WHITMAN (19-2/Finger Lakes West) vs. No. 4 AVON (17-5/Livingston County Division II) Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6:30 PM Bloomfield High School

Scoring offense: Marcus Whitman (63.70 PPG), Avon (66.17 PPG)

Scoring defense: Marcus Whitman (40.10 PPG), Avon (51.67 PPG)

Current streak: Marcus Whitman has won six straight; Avon has won three of its last four.

How they got here: After a first-round bye, the Wildcats defeated No. 8 Canisteo-Greenwood 88-47 in quarterfinals behind five double-figure performances. Jon Donovan led the charge with a game-high 23 points on seven field goals and a trio of treys.

Avon held off No. 5 Addison in the quarterfinals. The Braves won 54-43, as Connor Taylor flirted with a triple-double. Taylor scored 21 points, grabbed 10 boards, and dished seven assists. Nick Rowland posted a double-double on 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Players to watch for Marcus Whitman: Jon Donovan Sr. G 12 PPG, 5.0 APG; Seth Benedict Jr. G 12 PPG, 6.0 RPG; Liam Prendergast Jr. F 11 PPG,  8.0 RPG.

No. 2 GANANDA (19-2/Wayne County) vs. No. 3 CHARLES G. FINNEY (17-3/Private-Parochial) Tuesday, Feb. 26, 8:15 PM Bloomfield High School

Scoring offense: Gananda (76.90 PPG), Finney (76.95 PPG)

Scoring defense: Gananda (54.20 PPG), Finney (58.16 PPG)

Current streak: Gananda has won eight straight; Finney has won seven of its last eight.

How they got here: Sophomore guard Andrew Gabbard led the Blue Panthers, as No. 2 Gananda fended off No. 7 Sodus for the third time this season. In the 75-53 quarterfinal victory, Gabbard poured in 23 points, 19 of which hit in the crucial second quarter run. READ MORE.
