Penfield beats East, advances to AA semifinals

Penfield advanced to the Section V Class AA Girls semifinals with an 83-54 win over East.

PENFIELD, N.Y. — Brianne Moxley and Baylee Teal combined for 13 second quarter points, as the Penfield girls’ basketball turned a one-point lead into a double-digit advantage on their way to an 83-54 win over East High in Section V Class AA girls action.

Moxley scored seven, and Teal had six in the stanza to help Penfield take a commanding 39-23 lead into halftime.

Moxley finished with 22 on the night, and Teal had 13.

Nyara Simmons pumped in nine of her 21 points in the third quarter when Penfield outscored the Eagles 27-4 to put the game out of reach.

Penfield advanced to meet Our Lady of Mercy in a rematch of last year’s semifinal that the Monarchs won 73-66.

Jessica Rinere scored nine Thursday night for the Patriots. Nina Nesselbush had seven. Kennedy Cone scored four. Jasmine Cohoon had two and Elisa Farklaris chipped in with a free throw.

Shariona Blocker paced East (11-11) with 19 points. Shanique Simms added 11. Tanasia Williams had five points.
