ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Shariona Blocker connected on a 3-pointer at the final horn as the East High girls’ basketball team defeated School of the Arts (SOTA), 64-61 in opening round action of the 2019 Section V Class AA tournament.
Daniqua Spann deflected an inbound pass near midcourt with :03 remaining on the game clock, and Blocker gathered the loose ball before hitting the game winner.
The shot capped a 10-0 East run to close the game. Spann started the deciding rally with a 3-pointer.
Blocker finished with 22 points, six rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

Spann had 10 points and four steals. Makayla McCorker collected 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.
Tanasia Williams had nine points for the Eagles, and Shanique Sims had five.
East led 32-21 at halftime.
India Jordan netted 10 of her team-high 19 points in the third quarter when SOTA outscored East, 21-10. The Silverhawks stretched their advantage to seven with three minutes remaining.
Sharnell Graham scored 14 for SOTA (13-8). Tionnie Spain added 12. Urenesis Burgos and Regina’Li Quinones scored six apiece for SOTA. Evelyse Burgos (2) and Ashanti Carter (2) also scored for SOTA.
The win snapped a three-game East (11-10) winless streak. The Eagles will play Penfield in the Class AA quarterfinals.
