ROCHESTER — McQuaid Jesuit (Class AA), Pittsford-Mendon (Class A), Wellsville (B), Lyons (C), C.G. Finney (C), Avoca (D), Elba (D) and Prattsburg (D) all earned top ten honors in this season’s inaugural rankings published Tuesday morning by the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA).
With a come-from-behind victory over RCAC foe Wilson to start the week and a convincing win over St. Joe’s (VI), McQuaid starts the season ranked No. 9 in the poll. The Far West Regional champions a year ago, McQuaid is 3-0 on the season. They will host Canisius (VI) on Wednesday before taking on Niagara Falls (VI/No. 9 NYSSWA Class AA) in a rematch of last year’s Far West Regional. Jack Leasure’s squad is the only Section V Class AA team ranked in the top 25. Fairport, Gates-Chili and Hilton each earned Honorable Mention.
With a win at Greece Athena, Pittsford-Mendon (1-0) grabbed No. 9 in the Class A poll. Bob Nally’s club has one game this week when they host Brighton. At 3-0, NE Douglass earned No. 16 in the state while Leadership Academy (3-0) is No. 23. NE Douglass hosts East High on Thursday before meeting Global Concepts (VI) at the Bishop Kearney Christmas Showcase on Sunday. Leadership plays at Monroe on Tuesday and will host Edison Tech on Friday. Leadership will meet Northstar Christian, Saturday night at the BK Christmas Showcase. Athena, Irondequoit, Northstar, East and Wayne all earned Honorable Mention.
Wellsville held off Franklin with a last second basket and improved to 3-1 on the season. Good enough for No. 9 in the Class B poll. Wellsville plays at Wayland-Cohocton on Friday. Greece Odyssey (2-0), the reigning Section V Class B champion, starts the season at No. 14, and Newark (3-0) comes in at No. 21. Newark hosts Midlakes on Tuesday and then travels to Palmyra-Macedon on Friday. Odyssey hosts Brighton and Honeoye Falls-Lima this week. Hornell was named Honorable Mention.
Lyons, the 2018 Section V Class C2 champ, starts the year at No. 5 while C.G. Finney comes in at No. 9 in the Class C poll. Lyons (4-0) has wins over Williamson, Wilson Magnet, Gananda and Red Creek. The Lions play at Sodus and host East Rochester this week. Finney (5-1) won three games last week. The Falcons host Lima Christian on Friday. Caledonia-Mumford (4-0) hosts Mount Morris and plays LeRoy this week. Addison, Avon, Gananda, Red Jacket and Marcus Whitman were named to the Honorable Mention list.
At 6-0, the Avoca Tigers start the year ranked No. 2 Class D. Elba (2-0) is No. 4, and Prattsburg (3-0) holds No. 8. Genesee Valley (2-1) is No. 14. Batavia-Notre Dame, Belfast, Jasper-Troupsburg and Mount Morris earned Class D Honorable Mention.
