The halfway point of the boys’ soccer season finds divisional races up for grabs and jockeying for sectional position taking place. Here are some of this weekend’s top matches:
FRIDAY
Pittsford Sutherland (5-3-0/2-2-0) at Greece Athena (3-1-2/3-0-1) 4:30 PM
Greece Athena’s annual Purple Game pits the first-place Trojans against a Sutherland squad looking to rebound from a 2-0 setback earlier in the week to Churchville-Chili. Athena is undefeated in its last five, but the Trojans are struggling with injuries. Sophomore midfielder Dylan Rice sat out last Saturday’s match against Brockport. Senior Dylan McDermott has also been struggling with injuries. Othman Belhseine leads Athena with three goals and two assists. Will Bowen paces Sutherland with six goals and two assists. Dylan Kladstrup has three markers and five helpers for the Knights. Athena will wear purple for the game and all proceeds and donations collected will go to the Golisano Children’s Hospital to benefit families affected by cancer.
Pittsford Mendon (4-3-0/1-3-0) at Greece Arcadia (6-1-1/2-1-1) 4:30 PM
Arcadia, ranked No. 8 Class A NYSSWA, is unbeaten in its last seven. Mendon has won three straight. Tyler Lewandowski leads the Titan offense with 12 goals. Matt Bamford has eight goals for Mendon. The Titans have posted five shutout this season.
Gates-Chili (2-3-1/1-0-1) at Churchville-Chili (7-1-0/4-0-0) 6:30 PM
John Mahoney’s Churchville-Chili Saints put their seven-game winning streak on the line when their neighbors pay a visit. With seven goals and four assists, Colby Egan leads a C-C offense which has seen nine different Saints find back of the net this season. Seamus Parker has seven assists for Churchville, ranked No. 13 NYSSWA Class A. Dylan Rippe has four goals and six assists. Gates had a 1-0 lead over Fairport in the final minute of play before falling to the Red Raiders last Saturday.
Williamson (8-0-0/6-0-0) at Red Creek (0-7-0/0-6-0) 7 PM
Ranked No. 3 Class C NYSSWA, Williamson will need to make sure it doesn’t overlook winless Red Creek. Justin Eaton has 10 goals and seven assists for Marauders’ side which has outscored opponents, 34-6.
Bath-Haverling (7-0-0/3-0-0) at Wayland-Cohocton (2-4-1/0-3-1) 7 PM
A Livingston County Division I matchup under the lights gives Wayland-Cohocton a chance to upend the first place Rams who are No. 4 Class B NYSSWA. This is the first of two meeting within a week. Thomas Binkowski leads Bath with seven goals and 12 assists. Nick Strong has nine goals. Kevin Klimm leads Wayland-Cohoton with five markers.
SATURDAY
Webster Schroeder (6-2-0/2-2-) at Rush-Henrietta (3-3-1/2-2-0) 10 AM
R-H enters play having posted back-to-back shutouts. The Royal Comets defense has posted four clean sheets on the season and has more than one goal in just two matches. Schroeder will look to notch its fourth straight win. Colin Merkey and Alex Ortiz have combined to lead Schroeder with nine goals and three assists.
Greece Olympia (2-6-0/0-3-0) at Greece Odyssey (6-1-0/3-0-0) 2 PM
Olympia travels a few football fields down Maiden Lane looking to hand Odyssey its first divisional loss of the season. Dylan Ange has 12 goals and two assists for Odyssey. Martin Erdal and Guy Kadge lead Olympia with four goals apiece.
