Byron Buxton‘s season of frustration now has an added dose of disappointment.
It doesn’t appear that the Minnesota Twins will be bringing back Buxton to the big-league team as the Major League roster limit expands from 25 to 40 on Saturday.
Following Friday’s 3-1 loss to Lehigh Valley, Buxton was not told by Red Wings manager Joel Skinner that he would be heading to Texas to join the Twins.
A great defender who struggled at the plate with the Twins this year before his demotion, Buxton would gain a year on arbitration and free-agent rights if he’s on the big-league roster for two more weeks. If the Twins don’t call him up, they’ll retain control through 2022.
Buxton has endured five stints on the MLB or IL disabled lists this season, first for migraines, a second and third time because of a fractured left big toe, and the fourth and fifth times because of an injury to his left wrist.
He is now back in the Red Wings lineup, though not playing every day, and has pushed his average up to .272. He was at .193 on July 4.
The Twins needed an outfielder on Friday after Eddie Rosario was hurt on Thursday. Johnny Field was called up instead of Buxton.
Reliever Tyler Duffey is joining the Twins for sure on Saturday. The Twins are expected to announce callups following their game at Texas tonight.
