ROCHESTER – Sophomore Roosa Ariyo lit up 20th-ranked Cape Fear Community College for six goals in a 7-1 Monroe victory in NJCAA women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The high-scoring forward from Helsinki, Finland, scored twice in the first half before tallying four straight in a span of six minutes and 40 seconds in the second half as the Tribunes (2-0) took command. The six goals eclipsed her previous best of five, accomplished twice during her freshman campaign.
Katrina Yencer tallied a goal and an assist, and Thenia Zervas chipped in with three assists for the 10th-ranked Tribunes, who suffocated the Sea Devils with relentless pressure. Cape Fear didn’t get on the board until the 85th minute.
Ariyo netted her first less than three minutes in, cashing in on a feed from Yencer for a 1-0 lead. The Tribunes then thwarted a corner attempt from Cape Fear and turned it into a transition opportunity, with Yencer scoring to make it 2-0.
Ariyo notched her second in the 10th minute, and the score remained 3-0 into the break. Cape Fear had five corner kicks in the first half but were unable to capitalize.
Ariyo took over in the second half with four straight goals. She was the recipient of some solid ball movement, with Arianna Green, Kimmy McPhearson, and Zervas (twice) assisting on the scores.
Meryl Wakefield played 70 scoreless minutes in goal and made two saves for the Tribunes. Madison Mikulamade three stops down the stretch.
