ROCHESTER – The MCC women’s soccer team erupted for five goals in the first half en route to an 8-0 victory over Sussex County Community College int he season opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
Roosa Ariyo, Thenia Zervas, and Katrina Yencer all had two goals apiece for the Tribunes (1-0), who outshot the Skylanders 28-13 on the game. Paige McGrath and Justina Meneses also scored for Monroe.
Yencer got MCC on the board in the 18th minute, connecting off a feed from Meneses for her first collegiate goal. Meneses then scored one of her own in the 23rd minute to make it 2-0. Kimmy McPhearson assisted on the play.
The Tribunes put the game away with three goals in a span of two minutes and seven seconds. Ariyo scored her first off a Grace Bushen pass to make it 3-0.
Zervas and Ariyo then scored 20 seconds apart as Monroe continued to take command.
McGrath scored her goal in the 53rd minute, as McPhearson notched her second assist of the day. Zervas and Yencer added goals later in the half to complete the scoring.
Ariyo added two assists to go with her two goals. Arianna Green also had a helper.
Meryl Wakefield stopped three shots in goal and combined with Madison Mikula for the shutout for Monroe.
