The Miami Marlins traded cash to acquire Chris Bostick on Sunday, per MLB Network. He’s been added to the Marlins’ 40-man roster, as well, per MLB.com. Bostick had been designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending the majority of the season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was an International League All Star earlier in the summer.
Bostick was selected in the 44th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics after graduating from Aquinas. Since then, he’s spent time in the Texas, Washington and Pittsburgh organizations, prior to Sunday’s deal.
After spending the majority of his professional career playing various infield positions, Bostick has played most of this season as an outfielder in the Pirates organization, lending him credibility as a true utility player. He spent two games with Pittsburgh this season, along with 20 games in the majors in 2017.
There are now two Section V alumni in the Marlins organization: Bostick and Irondequoit grad Cito Culver. Culver spent much of the season playing for the Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate, New Orleans, but has missed time in recent weeks on the disabled list. The Marlins could choose to send Bostick to New Orleans, where he could conceptually team with Culver once the Eagles’ alum is back from injury. But the major-league depth chart in Miami features a lot of inexperience, so Bostick could get a chance in the show.
Earlier this season, Bostick played in Rochester, where he continued his hot hitting against his hometown team and spoke about his baseball journey. It’s the fourth time Bostick has been traded for in his professional career, meaning it’s the fourth team that chose to make an active effort to acquire him. It may finally be his best chance to play consistently in the major leagues.
“My goal everyday is just to play well and do what I can to get better,” Bostick said on June 5. “So much is being in the right place at the right time. Hoping and scratching and clawing until you get that shot.”
